Thankful For Kickoff Post: The Book Thief

Welcome to Thankful For week here at Pink Fluffy Hearts. We thought it’d be fun to share some of the books, authors and characters that have impacted us over the years. As we take turns posting our lists, we’d love to hear what books you’re thankful for as well.

Instead of making a list of books to start us off, I wanted to talk about the book that helped me fall back in love with reading once I was an adult. Once I went to college pretty much all reading for enjoyment was overshadowed by the massive amount of class readings and assignments even though prior to college reading was a great source of enjoyment and stress relief. During Christmas break of my sophomore year I grabbed my mom's copy of The Book Thief by Markus Zusak to take with us on a trip and for the first time in a long, long time I was so enthralled with a book I didn't put it down until I finished. I credit this book (and then the purchase of my kindle) for what rekindled my love of reading.

Because it’s been so long since I actually read this, I’m going to just share some of my favorite quotes and because that didn’t feel like enough to justify a post I made a wallpaper yay photoshop fun times.

“I wanted to tell the book thief many things, about beauty and brutality. But what could I tell her about those things that she didn't already know? I wanted to explain that I am constantly overestimating and underestimating the human race-that rarely do I ever simply estimate it. I wanted to ask her how the same thing could be so ugly and so glorious, and its words and stories so damning and brilliant.”

“Usually we walk around constantly believing ourselves. "I'm okay" we say. "I'm alright". But sometimes the truth arrives on you and you can't get it off. That's when you realize that sometimes it isn't even an answer--it's a question. Even now, I wonder how much of my life is convinced.”

“People observe the colors of a day only at its beginnings and ends, but to me it's quite clear that a day merges through a multitude of shades and intonations with each passing moment. A single hour can consist of thousands of different colors. Waxy yellows, cloud-spot blues. Murky darkness. In my line of work, I make it a point to notice them.”

How about you guys, was there a book that pulled you back into reading or maybe into a new genre that you'd never read before?
