Book Description:

Emma

Who I am and all I believe is marred with just one glance into angry, steel blue eyes. He seems to control my air, my ability to breathe. He makes me crave everything I know is a sin. Pure becomes tainted and lines are blurred. It's my fault; I'm the one who isn't strong enough. I've been damaged...broken. Breck's words haunt me...'There's a consequence for every choice you make.'

Breck

I've had so many women I can't even remember over half of their names, but none of them are mine; I make damn sure of that. I take what I desire and never look back. I don't need or want anyone, ever...not until I met Emma. Those eyes bore into what's left of my soul and her touch sears me, weakens me. I want to hate her for that. She is my ruin...my sweetest hell.

Excerpt:

I vaguely hear Anton making his not so smooth move, but my attention is still diverted to the enigma standing on the threshold.  Carnal thoughts wage with futile attempts to break the vexing connection enslaving my failing senses.

Heat simmers through my veins to places low in my belly and my lips part in resentful shock from the intensity of emotions raging inside of me.  His gaze is full of hate, punishing even, and chills spill down my spine.  Need to know why he affects me this way conquers all my internal alarms blaring for me to just stay away.

The redhead follows his gaze and the warning in her eyes is clear.  Disregarding the seething look, I pull away from Anton.  Breck’s lips curve slightly as his eyes gleam dominantly, daring, showing his intentions to play.  Standing my ground, I refuse to break the silent challenge.  I don’t understand the rules, or the game, but there’s no way in hell I’m going to lose.

Morning Coffee "Mugshot"...

My Coffee "MugShot"

I'm a lover of coffee and there for I have a ridiculous amount of coffee mugs. It's not even a joke. I swear the people I live with occasionally break them on purpose just to get rid of some of them. But out of all my mugs, I think this one is definitely my favorite. It was a gift from a friend, I believe they got it at Target, honestly I'm not sure. But I've had it for close to eight years and it's literally the best mug ever.

It's big. It's got my two of my three favorite colors on it(green and black, the third is pink in case you're wondering)and really how can you go wrong with a skull? Exactly, you can't. I'm not entirely sure if I'm attached to this mug because it's just super awesome or because of the person who gave it to me. But either way no one but me can use it and trust me...I'll know. Haha.

Book Description:

Echoes are the sounds the universe makes when you ignore it the first time.

Instead of signs, they are sirens. Echoes are louder and more dangerous than Clicks.

All the twins on Pinhold Island are healthy again, but the summer is still upside down. Cami's been paying better attention to what hides beneath the surface on her seemingly idyllic home, trying to make sense of the new threats to her friends and family. Massive storms have come to Pinhold, flooding the Island in a way not seen in generations. They leave behind destruction and the Red Tide, which lends the Island an eerie glow, makes the air itch and people's eyes burn. Through it all, Cami and Blake are working hard to repair their relationship, Mica is attempting to trust the grown ups on island, Shay is worried she'll never swim again and everyone is tying to re-focus on the Surf Carnival and training for The Guard.

But the threats to Pinhold from the sky don't compare to the danger that still hides beneath the waves. Can Cami and The Guard find the cause in time to reset the pin, or will they suffer damages that can never be reversed?

Excerpt:

Watching Mica playing the guitar, an uninvited thought popped into my head. I wished I had gotten a chance to see Kaleb play when he had been here. Just when I’d finally gotten used to him, he’d disappeared again. I knew he’d had a few concerts booked, it was much less tense between me and Blake now that he had left. But still. I would have loved to see him here. He used to like the drum circles, and he was a strong current in them, playing guitar and drums equally well.

I shooed away the thought before it lingered long enough to send a signal out, but I could feel Blake clicking into my head, like he had a Google search set up to ping him when Kaleb entered my brain. Maybe he did, or maybe the way I couldn’t get his brother out of my mind echoed between us in a way that would wreck things if I didn’t get myself under control.

Book Description:

Tina would rather sew up her girl parts with dental floss than go on a second date with a man. She's been dumped enough to know not to get attached.

But when Dr. Darion Marks comes into her art therapy room to ask a favor for a special patient, Tina recognizes the haunted look he buries beneath his stoic professionalism. So rather than be forced to ditch the handsome doctor after a single night, she decides not to date him at all.

So how exactly DO they end up half-naked in Surgical Suite B?

Dr. Darion has a lot to hide. His baby sister is the only family he has left, and he’s not leaving her treatment to some incompetent hack.

But now he’s breaking every hospital rule imaginable. He lied about his sister so he can manage her care, and now he’s banging the art therapy teacher between patient rounds like a fraternity boy at a keg party.

Nobody believes this can end well, not Tina’s friend Corabelle, who is overcoming a tragic history much like Tina’s, or even pink-haired Jenny, who thinks sex with strangers is good for your metabolism.

But Dr. Darion and Tina have one thing going for them – a fierce passion for each other that just might obliterate all their doubts, and solve all their problems.

Excerpt:

The voice that came from the door was like an icy blast. “Do you have any more personal questions that are completely out of line for your relationship with my patient?”

I whipped around. Dr. Darion stood in the door, glowering like a gargoyle.

“I—I was just asking about a song Cynthia performed for me yesterday.”

His eyes narrowed. I wondered what I possibly saw in him before, because now he was clearly the biggest jerk in the universe. He snatched my arm and dragged me from the room.

I tried to wrench free as he moved us down the hall. “What is going ON with you?” I asked.

“Hush,” he said.

With the movie coming out in just under two months, I thought it was time to dive head first into this series which has been on my TBR list for quite some time. The Maze Runner by James Dashner follows Thomas as he wakes in a strange place, with strange people and no memory of who or where he is. I’ve got to say, this book wasn’t anything like I expected, honestly it was better. I don’t think I’ve ever read anything like this before.

The way Dashner describes the Glade and the detail that goes into building this world in the book is absolutely amazing. Like its ridiculous how I can close my eyes and picture it all in my head. I also really enjoyed the characters and the way they talked and lived. It was different seeing all these kids sort of band together and pull their own weight.

Through troubled times, of which Fairwillow experienced its fair share, an ancient witch by the name of Famora has cursed Sath and Elle’s family. Their first born, Raios, is condemned to be The Apostle – the one that would throw the destiny of the village into doomed days.

Yet, Sath Eden is not to be swayed. But who is this other woman in his life? Who is Sibyl? Will she spell the final condemnation of the entire village? Sath had to vanquish the omen, dispel the augury, and destroy Famora.

What People Are Saying:

Fairwillow seems to be a quiet, peaceful town but under the double moons of Dawn and Vera it is quietly, slowly erupting from within. The heart of it all is Sath and Elle Eden. They have three children Raios, Mercy and Dield. The known witch of Fairwillow, Famora, spoke a prophecy of destiny over Raios before he was born and has been a troubled child ever since.

With a strike of a mighty pen Hiler has created a unique fantasy that is filled with mystery, suspense and intrigue as he whisks his readers to another time and place that you’ll never want to leave. I love the development of the relationships within the storyline gathered around Sath the farmer, a mighty man within his community and beyond. Sath the friend as the development of friendship grows with Orick the carpenter. Sath the kind, loving husband and the changes that relationship brings. Than Sath the father and how he struggles with his oldest son Raios. I love the character developments that grow at a pleasing pace and the raw deep emotion of the storyline. Especially unique as there is no main character but the Eden family as a whole evolves to become the main characters. There are so many underlying lessons to learn that one doesn’t want to miss a thing.

Sometimes it's the rash decisions, like hooking up in the sand, that lead you to the best places—the kinds of places where it's possible to let yourself fall in love again.

I know I say this all the time, but I absolutely love Alyssa Rose Ivy’s novels. One of my favorite series by Ivy is the Hazards series and The Hazards of Sex on the Beach was another amazing edition to it! Hazards of Sex on the Beach follows Cara as she deals with the fallout from her relationship with Aaron and works on getting back on track and moving on.

One thing I always love about Ivy’s novels are that they take place in the same universe and we get to see characters from previous books even as the focus shifts onto other characters. I loved seeing Juliet, Reed, Mallory, and Colt. It was awesome to see they are all still doing well. As much I as loved both of those couples I have to say I think this book was my favorite! I absolutely loved Chase!

Review: Confessions of a Sociopath: A Life Spent Hiding in Plain Sight

Confessions of a Sociopath: A Life Spent Hiding in Plain Sight by M.E. Thomas
Age Group: Adult
Genre: Memoir
Release Date: May 14, 2013
Buy Links:

Amazon

Book Description:

The first memoir of its kind, Confessions of a Sociopath is an engrossing, highly captivating narrative of the author's life as a diagnosed sociopath.

She is a charismatic charmer, an ambitious self-promoter, and a cunning and calculating liar. She can induce you to invest in her financial schemes, vote for her causes, and even join her in bed. Like a real-life Lisbeth Salander, she has her own system of ethics, and like Dexter, she thrives on bending and occasionally breaking the rules. She is a diagnosed, high-functioning, noncriminal sociopath, and this is her world from her point of view.

Drawn from the author's own experiences; her popular blog, Sociopathworld.com; and scientific literature, Confessions of a Sociopath is part confessional memoir, part primer for the curious. Written from the point of view of a diagnosed sociopath, it unveils for the very first time these people who are hiding in plain sight. The book confirms suspicions and debunks myths about sociopathy, providing a road map for dealing with the sociopath in your life.

*I received a free copy of this book from Blogging for Books  for an honest reivew

“I viewed everyone as objects, pieces in my chess game. I had no awareness of their own internal worlds and no understanding of their emotional palette because their bright hues were so different from my own drab shades of gray.” – Confessions of a Sociopath.

I absolutely loved this book. I spent a longer than usual time reading through it and taking everything in, and I have to say that with each passing chapter, Confessions of a Sociopath became more and more fascinating. M.E. Thomas definitely knows how to weave a tale, though the great thing about it is it’s truly not a tale of fiction. There are a lot of facts littered through the book about sociopaths and psychology, but what I loved most was seeing things from a new perspective.

Review: Vampire Lies

Vampire Lies by RaShelle Workman
Age Group: Young Adult
Genre: Paranormal
Release Date: March 11, 2014
Buy Links:

Amazon

Book Description:

Once upon a time there lived a vampire with wings and the genie who loved her. Born of the seven magics, Jasmine is different in every way, including the obnoxious wings on her back courtesy of the original Vampires.

She wants to be normal, to be a regular teenaged girl. When a gorgeous dark-haired boy named Laeddin shows up and promises to sneak her away from all her problems and hide her in the human world, she agrees.

But an evil lurks in her nightmares, a man with red eyes. It doesn’t take long for Jasmine to realize that no matter how far she tries to run from who she is, he’s only a dream away. He wants her. He needs her. He acts as though he loves her.

It’s becoming harder and harder to tell the difference between the path that’ll lead to her happily ever after, and the path that’ll lead to her destruction as well as all magic.

♥ ♥ ♥

"Vampire Lies" is the sequel to RaShelle Workman's "Blood and Snow". This second story revolves around the character of Jasmine, who is a winged vampire that was born of the seven magics. She's the first vampire to have wings in what seems like forever, so her life is anything but normal. However, she is a teenager and as teenagers are prone to do, Jasmine craves what she doesn't have. While most girls would love to live in a palace like her and be able to fly, Jasmine wants a normal high school experience that any regular human girl would have.

Her dreams seem like an unattainable fantasy until she meets Laeddin, who just happens to be a genie and is willing to grant her wish. Laeddin and Jasmine are transported to the human world where she is without her wings and is ready to go to high school in order to get some normalcy in her life. Of course, things don't go as smoothly as Jasmine might have hoped, and she finds herself in the middle of a mystery as her high school life is anything but normal.

I enjoyed reading "Vampire Lies". I had already read "Blood and Snow" beforehand and had trouble getting into the story, but that problem wasn't present with "Vampire Lies". I was engrossed in the story right away, and kept turning the pages wanting more. Whereas in "Blood and Snow" had our main character start off as "normal" and then venture into the fantasy realm, the opposite is true here. I think having "Vampire Lies" be set in a regular high school is something that the readers can relate to as it's something so familiar.

Book Description:

Lips red as rubies, hair dark as night. Drink your true love's blood, become the Vampire, Snow White."

EVERY THOUSAND YEARS THE VAMPIRE QUEEN SELECTS A NEW BODY, ALWAYS THE FAIREST IN THE LAND, AND THIS TIME SHE'S CHOSEN SNOW WHITE.

Snow White lives in Salem, Massachusetts with her dad, stepmother, and her cat, Gatsby. Her entire life she's been teased for her fairy tale name, and the fact that her seven best friends happen to be guys whose names begin with the same letters as the seven dwarves.

Everything changes two months before her sixteenth birthday. She's bitten by The Hunter, and transformed into a revenant—not quite human, not quite vampire.

♥ ♥ ♥

"Blood and Snow" by RaShelle Workman can be described as a "fractured fairy tale". A lot of the characters the story deals with have names that we might all be familiar with such as Snow White, Charming, and Ariel, but the characters aren't the Disney-fied versions that we've come to know and love. Instead, this is a story that deals with the modern day, and our main character is Snow White and she's turning into a vampire. That's right, pure-as-the-driven-snow Snow White is becoming one of those evil monster things that we're taught to fear.

Snow's dilemma is because the Vampire Queen of a magical realm has chosen her to be the next body she takes over (that's how she stays young and powerful forever), and Snow and her friends must find a way to defeat the Queen and learn to deal with the new changes happening to Snow.

It took me awhile to get into the story. It began with mostly describing who Snow White is, what her life is like, her relationship with her seven best friends (who all happen to be the boys who live next door to her), and there's not much that hooks the reader in right away. However, once the action got started, I was able to find myself more invested in Snow's story, and wanted to keep reading.

We went to our favorite coffee house. She ordered an extra-large caramel macchiato. I got an extra-large dark cherry mocha and a bagel with cream cheese and jelly to split. I rummaged around the bottom of my purse for money while we waited to hear the total. All I found were a couple crinkled singles and some loose change. I’d already talked Becca into sneaking offcampus; no way was I going to make her pay for breakfast, too.

I looked at her. She had her head down as she checked her text messages. “I got this. Want to grab some napkins?”

“Sure.” She turned on her heels, fingers flying over the small keypad on her phone.

“What’s in the box?”

I glanced down at the box like it was poison in my hand. “Rose gave me homework.”

“Oh yeah? What is it?”

“I don’t know. I’m afraid to look.” I closed my eyes slowly, hating the pathetic girl I was becoming in front of him, but somehow with Preston, I didn’t feel that natural urge to cover up my fears and insecurities. I could be myself around him, because I knew he would see through the lie. Like he already knew what I would say even before I thought of my response.

Preston reached out and took the box from my hand, tucking it under his arm. “Come on. I’ll drive you back to Liberty.”

“What about London?” The words were out so quickly that I didn’t have time to register what they suggested.

Preston stuttered, clearly taken off guard. “Uh, what about her?” He cocked an eyebrow at me, his lips angling up a fraction of an inch. But that was enough. He knew what the question meant. Damn it!

He stops outside a single storey, whitewashed cottage, and pulls a set of keys out of his jeans pocket. “Why would you want to stand out there all night?”

“I’m only waiting here while you get your car keys,” I say, frowning at him.

He leans against the door frame and folds his arms across his chest. “Pia, I asked you to have dinner with me, I didn’t say I was taking you OUT to dinner.”

February 5, 2016

Nothing ever happens in Cambria. Maybe that’s why I can’t wait to get out of here, the sheer boredom of my life. One-hundred-and-fourteen days until I’m gone. Mom won’t be able to stop me. Josh can’t play the school card anymore. I’ll be a high school graduate, eighteen years old. There’s no way they can make me stay.

I stare out of the window of the old Coffee Café and watch the clouds swirl, their dark shades of grey broadcasting a warning of the rain to come. February storms, March storms, April storms; always the same.

One-hundred-and-fourteen days click down in my thoughts, bringing me closer to freedom and a life with more meaning than the tedium of this place. Brushing my blonde layers from my face, I take a sip of my warm chai tea latte, so perfect on this dreary day. An involuntary shudder passes over me as the time continues to beat on, ever slowly, in my head.

Book Description:

Before college, before responsibilities, Hadley Beauman and best friend Lily are determined to have a summer to remember.

There will be all the usual dramas - ex-boyfriends who don't seem to know what 'ex' means, pesky younger brothers with unrequited crushes, but what Hadley didn't anticipate was the out-of-the-blue return of the seriously hot boy-next-door, Will Carson. The boy who broke her heart when he skipped town two years ago.

Will may have shot up a foot and filled out (oh yes), but inside he carries the weight of guilt - for leaving, for coming back... Now he's just passing through to tie up loose ends but it's clear the old chemistry still crackles between him and Hadley. Trouble is, it's built on two years of lies...

This summer might just be the best time of their lives, but is Hadley ready for everything to change - again?

Excerpt:

I enter the hallway, making a point to relax my shoulders. Lily still knows how to push my buttons. I make my way to Mr. Beauman’s office and just before I knock, I hear Hadley’s voice. It’s wrong but I lean closer to the door, listening.

“A little warning would have been nice, Dad.”

Mr. Beauman says something, but I can’t make it out.

“Well,” Hadley continues, “don’t expect him to stick around longer than he chooses.”

Her form nears the door and I don’t have a chance to move just as the door flings open.

A version of the sixteen year old girl I left two years ago stands in front of me. I was right, her braces are gone.

“Hey,” I say.

Book Description:

My life has turned out to be such a cliché. And not in a good way.

It’s not exactly Sixteen and Pregnant, but at eighteen my only advantage is a high school diploma. And if that’s not enough, the father—and I use that term loosely—couldn’t have hightailed it out of my life fast enough.

I thought I really knew him. Unfortunately, my boyfriend of three years transformed from Dr. Jekyll to Mr. Hyde once he realized his carefree, childless days would be coming to an end.

I’m over him now though. The real love of my life is chubby, has more gum than teeth, and stands a little over two feet tall. She may not have been planned, but I’ve never regretted having her. She is the center of my world.

A world that’s turned upside down when my ex returns ready to earn the love and trust of the child he abandoned before birth.

Letting him into my daughter’s life is one thing but letting him back into mine isn’t going to happen. Because the biggest mistake of my life has a name, and that name is Mitchell Aaron Kingsley.

And he’s one mistake I don’t ever intend to make again.

“Great, and I appreciate that,” he says, his tone heavy on the sarcasm. “But this is for Bree and you know I would do anything for her.”

Right. Bree comes first. As she should.

“Oh I know you would,” I reply, in total agreement with that. “You love her. You moved back home to be with her. You quit football for her. You’ve canceled plans for her. Believe me, Mitch, I can clearly see how much you love her.”

Excerpt:
From Dirty Little Secrets

Several skidding turns and rolling stops later, Frankie killed the engine, allowing the momentum of the car to propel them up the driveway beside his mother’s house. When he’d first hit town, he’d planned to take up residence in the tiny apartment above the detached garage, but his arrest changed all that. Instead, he’d crashed in some flea-bit motels on the port side of town, avoiding Ian Blake and his far-reaching grip. Instinct alone had steered him here with Marisela, to the same apartment where he’d lost his virginity to her—and she to him—all those years ago.

He fished the key out of the flowerpot beside the door and by the time he turned to Marisela, she’d kicked off her boots and jeans, right there in the open air.

Lust surged and he grabbed her, not thinking about anything but feeling her naked against him. They fell into the apartment, landing half on the bed, half on the floor. Before Frankie could remove his shoes and pants, Marisela lost her jacket and her T-shirt.

Can you tell me a little bit about your book and what inspired it?

I love mermaids and magick, so I thought why not bring them together. Of course I couldn't leave out shape shifters and sirens. I love fantasy realms and worlds. Heck my husband says I live in one, so why not write about one. Coral & Bone is set in the Earth realm and the underwater realm of Elosia. Coral & Bone is a meld of all my years of watching Disney movies and thrillers.

The Etlins in Coral & Bone are shifters. If you could be a shifter what animal would you want to be and why?

A crow because they are wickedly smart and eerie.

Coral & Bone is filled with magick and spells. If you could cast magick what would your first spell be?

Book Description:

Gabby lives by two unbreakable rules: don’t expose her kind, the Sary, and don’t fall in love—too bad some rules are made to be broken.

When Gabby’s most difficult charge accidentally shoots her in front of a class full of students, the event exposes her carefully hidden identity. She shifts from looking like a normal teen to her secret Sary form, revealing her wings and the existence of her kind—immortals who try to keep people from committing suicide.

Her incident attracts the attention of the next leader of the Sary, Jassen, who offers her an impossible bargain: she can keep her wings if she makes amends with those who know the truth. Things get more complicated when a rebel Sary, intent on exposing them to the world, starts interfering with Gabby’s work. And there’s no denying her attraction to Jassen, who is torn between his duties and his heart.

With threats at every turn and her immortality on the line, Gabby has to find a way to save the Sary or surrender the sky forever.

"Surrender the Sky" by Meradeth Houston is actually one book of a series that has to do with Sary, guardian angels who look over humans and help those who are thinking of committing suicide find their way.
Our story revolves around the Sary Gabby, who was assigned to a high school in hopes of helping a boy who's been bullied for years. However, things don't go as planned and she's faced with an even bigger challenge of making wrongs right so that she doesn't end up losing her wings and being kicked out by the other Sary.

Houston starts the action right off in the first chapter as Gabby is sitting in class and the boy she's supposed to be looking out for pulls a gun out in order to kill himself, and he's not afraid of taking others with him. Gabby tries to talk him out of it while also protecting her fellow classmates, but ends up getting shot, and exposes her wings in front of the entire class. Instantly, the stakes are raised and the reader is left turning the pages to see what Gabby's fate will end up being.

I think that there was also good world building involved in "Surrender the Sky". Throughout the story, Houston was able to explain what the Sary were, how they came to be (they weren't always winged guardian angels), and what their mission is. We even learn that there's a void-like blackness that awaits anyone who commits suicide, and they're fighting to prevent people from being sentenced to that fate.
There are a few twists and turns throughout the story as well.
