Book Description:

There are supernatural prisons hidden across the globe. Contained within these fortresses are some of the deadliest criminals from the five supernatural races: vampire, shifter, fey, magic users and demi-fey.

Jessa Lebron, twenty-two, has spent her entire life in Stratford, Connecticut, one of the gateway towns adjoining these prisons which protect the fortified borders.

She’s a wolf shifter, and her father leads the town council. She learns that much of her life has been hidden from her, secrets which threaten to tear apart the very fabric of her world. Especially the biggest secret of them all.

She is dragon marked.

Jessa only knows what she’s been told about the dragon marked, that they are dangerous and must be eliminated to prevent the rise of the dragon king, the powerful warmonger who had his head removed a thousand years ago. So now Jessa's on the biggest hit list of all. Dragon mark hunters are lethal and her only hope to evade detection is to keep the energy contained.

As more secrets unfold she finds herself locked up in Vanguard, the notorious American supernatural prison. Thankfully she’s not alone. Braxton, the dragon-shifter has her back. Together they must survive long enough to free themselves and the other dragon marked.

Because it’s time for the dragon marked to rise.

Excerpt:

I glared at the deadly but visually stunning dragon. He was massive; he’d had to tuck his wings in at his side to have room for movement. The black and blue of his scales shone even in the dying light.

The bright yellow eyes surveyed the room, before locking me in his gaze. He roared again and I decided to take a stand. In general I didn’t think much before I acted, and my plans were often considered to be brave or stupid. Usually both.

“Braxton Compass,” I scolded him, moving right up into his strike zone, my hands on my hips. “Your scaled dragon ass is blocking the doorway.”

Excerpt:

The sound of her screams reached him as he neared the dorm. Pausing at the threshold, the man stepped inside. Death and the wind were at his back. Dozens of hollow-eyed students turned to observe his presence. Fear had twisted their youthful faces into horrific masks. A few of them wept. Others clung together as another scream echoed into the night. The man flinched. Then he steeled himself against all emotion. His kind was supposed to feel nothing.

He made his way through the crowd, students eagerly shuffling aside to let him pass. It was as if somehow they sensed in him the power to end her suffering. When a young man dressed only in boxers and a lettered shirt stepped forward from a cluster of solemn dorm mates, the man stopped. He recognized the boy.

“You are William. You are the one who called.”

“Yes, sir,” the young man said while nodding. His eyes were wide and frightened as he pointed ahead to a closed door painted prison grey. “She’s in there, sir.”

The man looked at the door, and then back at the boy. “Is she alone?”

Excerpt:

“Are you ready?” Logan asks in a soft murmur.

Closing my locker, I nod and smile at him, trying to hide my anxiety. Why did I agree to go to this club meeting? What if they sacrifice goats to some pagan god or something? Laughter wells up within at the absurd image of an animal sacrifice occurring on the third floor of the Sciences building.

Besides, it couldn’t be a goat—it would have to be a cat or a fetal pig since that’s what the AP biology class is dissecting this year. I guess it could be a crawfish or an earthworm since the regular biology classes dissect those.

My laughter finally bubbles out when I picture figures in black robes sacrificing an earthworm to their pagan god. I feel Logan’s eyes on me. When I glance at him, he has a strange, indecipherable look on his face.

“Are you alright?” he asks, concern clouding his features.

“Yeah, just a little nervous,” I reply, fighting another blush that threatens to form.

“Come on now, open your eyes.”

“Aaaah,” moaned the teenaged girl as she tilted her head toward the sound of the voice awakening her. “Where—where am I?” she stammered, trying in vain to lift her eyelids.

Skylee Porter was in a large, rectangular room lined with oil paintings and sculptures. Her dust-covered jeans were torn at the knees and her wavy blonde hair was spread around her in a tangled mess. A trickle of dried blood marked a trail from her ear down her neck and her left knee throbbed painfully.

Book Description:

Most sixteen-year olds aren't worried about the fate of their immortal souls.

May Krieg should be. Typically, honor student May's biggest problems have revolved around her  super-hot arch-rival, Jack. But when a school project takes them ghost-hunting  in a local cemetery, she discovers that an ominous force roams in the darkness  around her.
And it follows her home.

It claws its way into her life, burning messages into her wall and imprinting them onto her body. Even worse, she can't tell if it's trying to possess her... or  protect her.

May's thoughts soon become actions, causing the target of her anger severe physical pain and giving her a rush the likes of which she has never  experienced. She quickly realizes that she needs to find a way to reign in this power before she kills someone. May hates the pleasure it gives her, hates herself for hurting others, but she can't stop.

As her entire world shatters around her, she is forced to ask what her soul is worth-- and who would she risk losing her soul to save?

I went into reading "Daughter of the Fallen" by Madeline Wynn thinking one thing and came out of it thinking something completely different. What initially interested me in this book was the description and paranormal aspect that it held. However, while I was reading the book, the paranormal parts weren't as enjoyable to me as the other "normal" parts of the main character's life.

"Daughter of the Fallen" centers around the character May, and when we first meet her she's hunting ghosts with her friends for a school project. What could go wrong, right? Wynn starts the action and gives us the paranormal right away with this scene, because May (literally) stumbles upon something that's more than she bargained for when she went out on the hunt, and it starts to take a toll on her daily life. It's not long before she's having nightmares and seeing shadows out of the corner of her eye.

Seventeen-year-old Anastasia Lockhart has never led an easy life, but when she starts getting into serious trouble, she’s sent to live with her grandparents in Cedar Falls.

The small, picturesque town hasn’t changed since she visited four years ago, with one exception – the presence of a handsome, mysterious boy named Frost.

Despite warnings from her grandparents and friends to stay away from Frost, Anastasia can’t deny their attraction, and the more time they spend together, the deeper in love they fall.

Unfortunately, Frost has a secret that is beyond Anastasia’s wildest imagination, and she soon finds herself in the midst of a supernatural legend that has haunted Cedar Falls for years.

Can Anastasia and Frost’s love really overcome anything, or are their fates much darker?

Frostbitten follows Anastasia Lockhart who at the beginning of the story is being shipped off to her grandparents in Cedar Falls because her mom can no longer deal with her teenage antics. Anastasia used to spend her summers in Cedar Falls with her grandparents when she was younger and she had fond memories of the people and town. She’s hoping this will be a chance for her to start over and get back to the person she used to be.

Heather Beck created an amazing setting and I really loved the town of Cedar Falls, but the thing I loved most about this story was how well written it was. I liked how strange everyone was acting and how you know right away that something isn’t quite right between the people in the town. I also really liked how there’s this kind of rivalry mixed in with mystery. I thought that whole angle was great.

Excerpt:

The minutes passed slowly as Anastasia continued to lie there, listening to the sounds of Cedar Falls. An owl hooted loudly right outside her window, most likely in protest to the strong winds which blew through the trees, rattling their branches in the process. As these sounds persisted, they overpowered Anastasia’s thoughts and soon became white noise. She began to relax, and as her eyelids became heavy, she finally gave into the sweet temptation of sleep. Howl...

Startled by the unexpected noise, Anastasia’s eyes flew open and she sat straight up in bed. That had sounded like a wolf’s howl, but maybe she was just dreaming. Anastasia quickly wondered if she’d even fallen asleep, and if she had, why she was dreaming about wolves. Howl...

Now realizing that the wolf wasn’t a figment of her imagination, Anastasia’s body stiffened with fear. That howl had been near – too near. She’d never heard wolves in Cedar Falls before, far less right outside her grandparents’ house. Remaining still for several moments, Anastasia listened, hearing only the sound of her quick, shallow breath. It seemed as if the wolf had moved on, but she had to be sure. She pulled her duvet aside and then stepped out of bed. As her bare feet touched the cool wooden floor, a shiver went through her body. Quietly, she crept toward the window and then drew the curtains.

Book Description:

Sydney Sage is an Alchemist, one of a group of humans who dabble in magic and serve to bridge the worlds of humans and vampires. They protect vampire secrets—and human lives. In The Fiery Heart, Sydney risked everything to follow her gut, walking a dangerous line to keep her feelings hidden from the Alchemists.

Now in the aftermath of an event that ripped their world apart, Sydney and Adrian struggle to pick up the pieces and find their way back to each other. But first, they have to survive.

For Sydney, trapped and surrounded by adversaries, life becomes a daily struggle to hold on to her identity and the memories of those she loves. Meanwhile, Adrian clings to hope in the face of those who tell him Sydney is a lost cause, but the battle proves daunting as old demons and new temptations begin to seize hold of him. . . .

Their worst fears now a chilling reality, Sydney and Adrian face their darkest hour in this heart-pounding fifth installment in the New York Times bestselling Bloodlines series, where all bets are off.

♥ ♥ ♥

Let's talk about how excited I am that Richelle Mead's "Silver Shadows" finally came out! I didn't expect to love Mead's "Bloodlines" series as much as I do, but I've become completely emotionally invested in my little book babies Sydney and Adrian. Thankfully, I had its release day off of work, so I didn't have to waste any time in starting the book I've been waiting months and months for.

I actually had to go to three different stores in order to find "Silver Shadows", but it was worth the drive. Mead's newest installment in the series did not disappoint, and in fact, offered more than I thought it would. Again, the book is told in both Sydney and Adrian's point of views, and alternates by chapter. Sydney is dealing with being trapped in a reeducation facility, while Adrian is left in Palm Springs to deal with her loss and try to figure out how to find her and bring her back home to him.

Since Adrian and Sydney were forced apart at the end of the last book, "The Fiery Heart", I was a bit worried that I wouldn't be able to enjoy "Silver Shadows" as much as I did with the previous books where they had a lot more interaction. However, I was pleasantly surprised because I was still hooked as the two of them tried to get back to each other.

Genre: Paranormal Romance
Release Date: July 3, 2014

Book Description:

Echoes are the sounds the universe makes when you ignore it the first time.

Instead of signs, they are sirens. Echoes are louder and more dangerous than Clicks.

All the twins on Pinhold Island are healthy again, but the summer is still upside down. Cami's been paying better attention to what hides beneath the surface on her seemingly idyllic home, trying to make sense of the new threats to her friends and family. Massive storms have come to Pinhold, flooding the Island in a way not seen in generations. They leave behind destruction and the Red Tide, which lends the Island an eerie glow, makes the air itch and people's eyes burn. Through it all, Cami and Blake are working hard to repair their relationship, Mica is attempting to trust the grown ups on island, Shay is worried she'll never swim again and everyone is tying to re-focus on the Surf Carnival and training for The Guard.

But the threats to Pinhold from the sky don't compare to the danger that still hides beneath the waves. Can Cami and The Guard find the cause in time to reset the pin, or will they suffer damages that can never be reversed?

♥ ♥ ♥

Excerpt:

Watching Mica playing the guitar, an uninvited thought popped into my head. I wished I had gotten a chance to see Kaleb play when he had been here. Just when I’d finally gotten used to him, he’d disappeared again. I knew he’d had a few concerts booked, it was much less tense between me and Blake now that he had left. But still. I would have loved to see him here. He used to like the drum circles, and he was a strong current in them, playing guitar and drums equally well.

I shooed away the thought before it lingered long enough to send a signal out, but I could feel Blake clicking into my head, like he had a Google search set up to ping him when Kaleb entered my brain. Maybe he did, or maybe the way I couldn’t get his brother out of my mind echoed between us in a way that would wreck things if I didn’t get myself under control.

Review: Blood and Snow

Blood and Snow by RaShelle Workman

Genre: Paranormal
Release Date: March 11, 2014

Book Description:

Lips red as rubies, hair dark as night. Drink your true love's blood, become the Vampire, Snow White."

EVERY THOUSAND YEARS THE VAMPIRE QUEEN SELECTS A NEW BODY, ALWAYS THE FAIREST IN THE LAND, AND THIS TIME SHE'S CHOSEN SNOW WHITE.

Snow White lives in Salem, Massachusetts with her dad, stepmother, and her cat, Gatsby. Her entire life she's been teased for her fairy tale name, and the fact that her seven best friends happen to be guys whose names begin with the same letters as the seven dwarves.

Everything changes two months before her sixteenth birthday. She's bitten by The Hunter, and transformed into a revenant—not quite human, not quite vampire.

♥ ♥ ♥

"Blood and Snow" by RaShelle Workman can be described as a "fractured fairy tale". A lot of the characters the story deals with have names that we might all be familiar with such as Snow White, Charming, and Ariel, but the characters aren't the Disney-fied versions that we've come to know and love. Instead, this is a story that deals with the modern day, and our main character is Snow White and she's turning into a vampire. That's right, pure-as-the-driven-snow Snow White is becoming one of those evil monster things that we're taught to fear.

Snow's dilemma is because the Vampire Queen of a magical realm has chosen her to be the next body she takes over (that's how she stays young and powerful forever), and Snow and her friends must find a way to defeat the Queen and learn to deal with the new changes happening to Snow.

It took me awhile to get into the story. It began with mostly describing who Snow White is, what her life is like, her relationship with her seven best friends (who all happen to be the boys who live next door to her), and there's not much that hooks the reader in right away. However, once the action got started, I was able to find myself more invested in Snow's story, and wanted to keep reading.

Book Description:

Shadowhunters and demons square off for the final showdown in the spellbinding, seductive conclusion to the #1 New York Times bestselling Mortal Instruments series.
Darkness has descended on the Shadowhunter world.

Chaos and destruction overwhelm the Nephilim as Clary, Jace, Simon, and their friends band together to fight the greatest evil they have ever faced: Clary's own brother.

Sebastian Morgenstern is on the move, systematically turning Shadowhunter against Shadowhunter. Bearing the Infernal Cup, he transforms Shadowhunters into creatures of nightmare, tearing apart families and lovers as the ranks of his Endarkened army swell. Nothing in this world can defeat Sebastian, but if they journey to the realm of demons, they just might have a chance.

Lives will be lost, love sacrificed, and the whole world will change. Who will survive the explosive sixth and final installment of the Mortal Instruments series?

♥ ♥ ♥

It was a bittersweet moment for me when I found out that "City of Heavenly Fire" by Cassandra Clare came out last month. As always, I was excited to read the new installment of her "The Mortal Instruments" series, but I was sad that this would be the last book with the characters I've become so attached to.

"The Mortal Instruments" series opened up a world full of demons and Shadowhunters (those who protect the world from demons), and we follow the story of a group of teenagers as they battle those who are trying to disturb the peace they try so hard to protect. The main character, Clary, just found out about this world when she meets Shadowhunter Jace and finds herself in the middle of all of the chaos of battle. "City of Heavenly Fire" is the conclusion to that battle, and I'm happy to say that it was a satisfying one.

All too often, the last book of a series can be a huge disappointment (I'm looking at you "Allegiant" and "Mockingjay"), and I was glad that this series I've invested so much time in ended on a good note. "City of Heavenly Fire" is book six of "The Mortal Instruments", and the action of the first five books continues throughout without skipping a beat.

Dangerous Creatures (Dangerous Creatures #1) by Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl
Age Group: Young Adult

Book Description:

Ridley Duchannes is nobody's heroine. She's a Dark Caster, a Siren. She can make you do things. Anything. You can't trust her, or yourself when she's around. And she'll be the first to tell you to stay away-especially if you're going to do something as stupid as fall in love with her

Lucky for Ridley, her wannabe rocker boyfriend, Wesley "Link" Lincoln, never listens to anyone. Link doesn't care if Rid's no good for him, and he takes her along when he leaves small-town Gatlin to follow his rock-star dream. He teams up with a ragtag group of Dark Casters, and when the band scores a gig at a hot Underground club, it looks like all of Link's dreams are about to come true

But New York City is a dangerous place for both Casters and Mortals, and soon Ridley realizes that Link's bandmates are keeping secrets. With bad-boy club owner Lennox Gates on her heels, Rid is determined to find out the truth. What she discovers is worse than she could have imagined: Link has a price on his head that no Caster or Mortal can ever pay. With their lives on the line, what's a Siren to do.

♥ ♥ ♥

Let's just start this out by saying how excited I was when I heard there was going to be a spinoff for the "Beautiful Creatures" series, and how that excitement only amplified when I found out that the new series was going to revolve around Ridley and Link. These two were possibly my favorite part of "Beautiful Creatures", and I'm glad that I get to indulge in them even more.

"Dangerous Creatures" picks up after our last series left off, and all of the characters we know have now graduated high school and are about to go their separate ways. Link plans on going to New York (even though his mother thinks he's going to a southern religious college) to try to make it big in music, and our favorite siren, Ridley, is going along for the ride. What Link doesn't know is that Ridley has a secret agenda for her going along, and has some debts that she has to pay off and she plans on using him to do it.

The thing that I've always loved about these two is their give and take. Link was used as comic relief in the "Beautiful Creatures" books, and Ridley is a bad girl gone good (or good girl gone bad depending on the day) with some serious selfish tendencies. It doesn't make sense for these two to work as a couple, but some how they just do. The shipper fangirl inside me loves every fight they have, even as I'm also yelling at them to just get over themselves and love each other already. But that's what's fun with these two. They fight like cats and dogs, but still find ways to look out for each other.

But she knows something unnatural was involved and refuses to stop looking until she finds his killer, even if it means her reputation as a senior is ruined. Even if it means there really are monsters living among us.

With the discovery of the mothmen, witches, vampires and all the creatures she always suspected were out there, Harper finds herself amidst a complex bundle of unseen heroes who call themselves "Keepers", sworn to keep the secret of the paranormal creatures that walk this earth. Before she can get a handle on her future, she becomes central to a battle between the questionable “heroes” and the evil she’s been training to fight, leaving her to wonder if there’s any way to change the fate that has been foretold before it’s too late

Have you ever been in the middle of reading a book and all of a sudden thought to yourself, ‘Wow, this would make a great movie?’ Well, that's exactly what happened while I was reading "Paranormal Keepers". Not only were the story and the characters interesting, but I could see it all happening as I read it, and it wasn't that big of a leap to imagine watching it on the big screen.

The story revolves around our main character, Harper, and her life has been through some major changes. Even though she was part of the popular clique at her high school, she has been labeled as an outcast ever since the mysterious death of her boyfriend (that she was actually present for). Her classmates distance themselves even further from her once she gets obsessed with researching the paranormal since she believes that that is the only way to explain what happened to her boyfriend.

However, that's not where the major changes to her life end. Harper gets in so deep with the paranormal, that she actually stumbles across some. She is introduced to a group of people called "Keepers", people who know about the paranormal and are trained on how to fight the big bad guys and keep the world in order. Harper is taken to their school and starts to train to be a Keeper herself, all the while wondering if she'll finally get the answers she's been craving about her boyfriend's murder.

"My Soul Immortal" was a book that could have went either way for me. Reading the description, I was intrigued, but didn't know how I would ultimately feel about it when everything was said and done. I'm glad to say that it did end up being something that I enjoyed and was a pleasurable read.

This book is about a guy named Jack, who just happens to be immortal. When a lot of people look at the word "Immortal", the word "Vampire" comes to mind a lot. However, that's not Jack's case. Jack just can't die (and believe me, he's tried). He has been "gifted" with a long life without any of the vampire tendencies of having to drink blood or only go out at night or any of that nonsense.

While some people might think that that sounds like a great bargain, Jack doesn't see his immortality as a gift, but instead sees it as a curse (and not just because he's perpetually stuck looking like a 19-year-old and is stuck getting carded all of the time when he wants a drink). He's lost the love of his life decades ago, and has just been wandering around heartbroken ever since.

Book Description:

Everyone has a past, but for most it isn’t as long ago as Seth Sangre. His past is literally thousands of years ago. Seth’s life led him to the present seeking something that might help him save his country from destruction. He has been in the present for over three years now and just found exactly what he has been looking for

Mari had dreams that college will be a fresh start, one where she would start over and not fall for the good looking player like high school. Unfortunately for her, that’s exactly what ends up falling into her lap on the first day she moves into the dorms. Now she has to hold to her promise to herself and not fall for the handsome Seth.

But he doesn’t plan to make it easy for her. Seth has already marked her as his next conquest. As the semester progresses, Mari learns that Seth might just have a life of his own that’s actually from the past. Suddenly Mari finds her future along with her past put into question.

She’s connected to Seth far more than she ever wanted to be and maybe the player isn’t who she thought he was. If Mari can trust her heart enough to follow him, Seth will lead Mari on an adventure of a lifetime and reveal family secrets she never knew existed

I knew that I would end up liking "Carnelian" when I first signed up to do a review for it, but I had no idea how much I would come to love the book. It was one of those books that instantly hooked me in and I didn't want to put it down until it was finished. It only took me a little over a day to finish (it would have been less if I didn't have to go and do that stupid thing called "work"), and I'm already excitedly anticipating book two.

Our book starts with the main character, Mari, starting her first day of her first year of college. She's on her own in a new place, and not even her mother is there to make sure she's settled (her mother and grandfather that they live with were called away on business). Mari is sitting outside reading a book, when an attractive guy literally falls into her lap, since he fell asleep and slumped over into her personal space. She carefully eases herself away, but that isn't the last time she sees or deals with Mr. Narcolepsy.

The sleeping hottie turns out to be our lead male character, Seth. And right from the beginning, he is convinced that Mari is the right one for him. One of the big things that I liked about this book was that Mari didn't automatically swoon for Seth. Yes, she has eyes and is the first to admit that he is good looking, but she doesn't want to end up as just another notch on a bedpost. Because of a conversation she accidently overheard, Mari's first impression of Seth is that he's a player and she's reluctant to let anything happen there.

Excerpt:

Cold water hit me in the face. I gasped and sputtered and sat up. Racer stood beside the bed, eyes bloodshot and furious. He’d turned the bedroom light on. The clock beside the bed read just after one.

“Is my power back on?” I asked, wiping my eyes as if it were nothing unusual to be awakened with water in the face.
