Excerpt:

I sat up with a start, my heart racing as my eyes took in my surroundings. After a moment of panic, a calm settled over me as I realized I was in my room. It had only been a dream, a horrific, confusing, and altogether terrifying dream. My heart was still racing, pounding fiercely against my chest, as I felt a cold sweat beading on the back of my neck.

It took a few seconds before I realized I was holding my breath. Letting out a sigh of relief, I turned my eyes to the clock by my bed. A groan escaped my lips as I saw the time; it was three A.M. Running my hand down my face, I took a second to compose myself, taking in slow careful breaths, trying to calm my heart.

Sliding my hand back up across my face, I ran it through the long strands of blond hair, pulling them off my neck and over my shoulder. As I turned to lie back down, a shadow moved past my window and I froze, my breath caught in my chest once more.

“Remember your One Wish. Use it wisely, to have something, some small part of him to hold on to as your own – a moment sealed in time, one perfect memory that you will have to live on for the rest of your life. For the love of all that’s good, young woman, make your One Wish count.” –Aunt Tilda, Of Stardust

Of Stardust follows geeky bookstore clerk Till Nesbitt as she tries to find her place in the world, thinking there’s nowhere she belongs, when in reality she belongs to a world where fairy godmothers exist. Oh yeah, and she is one!

February Grace did a really nice job of creating a unique plot and with a multitude of different levels. I really enjoyed how the fairy godding world was in our world, but not. How you simply had to shift your way of thinking to get to the special fairy university to train and get your certificate. I thought that was a really nice touch.

“True friendship is when two friends can walk in opposite directions, yet remain side by side.” – Carol, Sia.

Sia by Josh Grayson follows 17-year-old Sia as she struggles to regain the memories she lost only to realize that the person she was might not be the person she wants to be anymore. I’ve got to say when Josh contacted me about his book, the summary intrigued me and after I saw the breathtaking cover, I had to read it. But I’m not sure anything could have prepared me for the profound and emotional story found within these pages.

Sia is definitely making it onto my list of favorite book and I don’t say that lightly. I really enjoyed the story that unfolded through this book. From the moment Sia wakes up on that bench her life is thrust into upheaval. I can’t possibly imagine what it would be like not knowing who I am or where I’m from the way she did.

But the closer he gets to her, the more his emotions take a dangerous turn, and he risks breaking one of the most valued covenants of his order. The punishment for which is a fate worse than death.

The adventure this unlikely couple becomes engulfed in could cost them their lives and their souls.

Excerpt:

Seth stepped from the cool water of the sunken, purification basin. He was a hundred feet under the town hall and fair grounds, hidden inside the underground temple. The only light came from the burning fire pots in each corner of the room, and the only oxygen supply filtered in from the heavy machinery above. Smoke and incense choked the air around him. And the stone walls, floors, and ceiling added little comfort. It was like being buried alive in a tomb.

He picked up a clean linen towel from the ground and began to dry himself off. The servant girl who had bathed him quickly jumped out of the basin, confused. She looked at him with worried eyes, her pupils were dilated like the eyes of all the other girls living in the temple. Trying to reassure her, he waved her back.

She gulped and bowed. “H-Have I have d-done something w-wrong, my Lord?”

“No,” Seth told her. He stroked her bare skin, spreading a little of his charm. “Everything is fine.”

Book Description:

Thalli has fifteen minutes and twenty-three seconds left to live. The toxic gas that will complete her annihilation is invading her bloodstream. But she is not afraid.

Thalli is different than others in The State. She feels things. She asks questions. And in the State, this is not tolerated. The Ten scientists who survived the nuclear war that destroyed the world above believe that emotion was at the core of what went wrong—and they have genetically removed it from the citizens they have since created.

Thalli has kept her malformation secret from those who have monitored her for most of her life, but when she receives an ancient piece of music to record as her community’s assigned musician, she can no longer keep her emotions secreted away.

Seen as a threat to the harmony of her Pod, Thalli is taken to the Scientists for immediate annihilation. But before that can happen, Berk—her former Pod mate who is being groomed as a Scientist—steps in and persuades the Scientists to keep Thalli alive as a test subject.

The more time she spends in the Scientist’s Pod, the clearer it becomes that things are not as simple as she was programmed to believe. She hears stories of a Designer—stories that fill her mind with more questions: Who can she trust? What is this emotion called love? And what if she isn’t just an anomaly, but part of a greater design?

Holy twist Batman!

I was so not expecting that ending, not even a little. Anomaly by Krista McGee follows 17-year-old Thalli, an anomaly, in the new “world” that was created by scientists to live in the wake of a nuclear disaster. The plot of this story is incredibly unique. I’ve never read anything like it before, but I do have to say I was expecting something a little different.

I enjoyed how inquisitive Thalli was and the connection she had with Berk. I also really liked how descriptive McGee was with the pods and the underground world they had created. Having people born for a specific task is an interesting idea. Knowing that people who are “different” or question the state get annihilated is super intense.

Untellable by Suzanne Lilly wasn’t exactly what I was expecting when I decided to dive into this book and review it for my site, but despite my misconceptions it was actually a really cute story. Untellable follows Aspen Dwyer, a recent high school graduate who has aged out of the foster system and is hiding from her incarcerated Father.

Her social worker, Margot helped her get a summer job in Honey Creek, Ohio where she planned to hide out so her Father can’t find her. I love how the town is described. This small intimate place where people know each other’s business and are friendly (It totally reminds me of Stars Hollow from Gilmore Girls!)

I am crying ugly tears people.

These might be the ugliest tears I’ve cried in a while, damn emotions. Addicted to You by Krista and Becca Ritchie blew me away. I don’t think I was expecting such an intense read; they took things a lot further than I thought they would and honestly I’m glad. A lot of writers are too afraid to go the distance with addiction books, but we certainly didn’t have to worry about that here.

Addicted to You follows Lily Calloway and her best friend Loren Hale (Lo) through a tumultuous battle of addiction and deceit while they attempt to hide their lies behind a fake relationship that’s teetering on a ledge threatening to spill their darkest secrets to the world.

Lily is a sex addict and while in theory that may make you giggle, it’s nothing to laugh about. Her addiction is not only embarrassing to her, but she’s constantly disappointing the people she cares about because she’s running off the feed her addiction. She sleeps with a number of strangers and is constantly going to the clinic to get tested and make sure she’s not pregnant.

Book Description:

Rose Zarelli has big plans for sophomore year—everything is going to be different. This year, she’s going to be the talented singer with the killer voice, the fabulous girl with the fashionista best friend, the brainiac who refuses to let Jamie Forta jerk her around...

...but if she’s not careful, she’s also going to be the sister who misses the signals, the daughter who can only think about her own pain, the “good girl” who finds herself in mid-scandal again (because no good deed goes unpunished) and possibly worst of all...the almost-girlfriend.

When all else fails, stop looking for love and go find yourself.

♥ ♥ ♥

Rose is awesome.

I pretty much read Confessions of an Almost Girlfriend immediately after finished Confessions of an Angry Girl, which made things that much better for me since everything was so fresh in my mind. While I enjoyed the first book in this series the second book is by far my favorite. In Confessions of an Angry Girl we see Rose getting mad a lot, but 90 percent of the time we didn’t see her actually do anything about that.

Well, in Confessions of an Almost Girlfriend, Rose has finally found her voice. Typically when reading young adult novels I’m drawn in by drama and a really good love interest, but not in this case. I really love the story that Louise Rozett is telling. She takes her time developing her message and then implements it in a way we can all relate to. Rose and the life she is simultaneously running from and trying to figure out is realistic and empowering.

Book Description:

Rose Zarelli, self-proclaimed word geek and angry girl, has some confessions to make…

1. I'm livid all the time. Why? My dad died. My mom barely talks. My brother abandoned us. I think I'm allowed to be irate, don't you?

2. I make people furious regularly. Want an example? I kissed Jamie Forta, a badass guy who might be dating a cheerleader. She is now enraged and out for blood. Mine.

3. High school might as well be Mars. My best friend has been replaced by an alien, and I see red all the time. (Mars is red and "seeing red" means being angry—get it?)

Here are some other vocab words that describe my life: Inadequate. Insufferable. Intolerable.

(Don't know what they mean? Look them up yourself.)

(Sorry. That was rude.)

♥ ♥ ♥

“This, dear reader, is a tale of the hell of high school. Of being dropped into a world where it seems like everyone is speaking a foreign language. Where friends become enemies and enemies become nightmares. Where life suddenly seems like a string of worst-case scenarios from health-class movies…” – Rose Zarelli

When I originally agreed to review Confessions of an Angry Girl (a big thanks to Louise Rozett and Netgalley for the free copy) I did so based on the gorgeous cover of the book and the interesting blurb about it. I have to say though, going in, I didn’t expect the book I got. I was expecting something a little more edgy and unpredictable with a slightly older central character.

But despite those preconceptions I really enjoyed this book. Rose is a freshmen in high school and she just can’t seem to catch a break. In my opinion her best friend Tracy is completely shallow and while they have their ups and downs throughout the book, if I were Rose I would have ended that friendship long ago.

Satan’s Playlist

I am often asked if I have playlists for the books I write, which got me thinking. One of the key characters in my novel, Boyfriend from Hell is Satan himself. What music do you suppose would be burnin’ up Satan’s ipod? I thought I’d have a little fun with it. Here is my take on Satan’s Playlist:

I believe Satan has to be a serious rocker, so I am certain Bat Out Of Hell by Meatloaf would be high up on his list; along with Hotel California by The Eagles. He’d round out his rock list with a little metal: Hells Bells by AC/DC, and what devil doesn’t listen to The Rolling Stones: It Must Be Hell, along with another Stone’s hit, Sympathy for The Devil. Yeah, I bet Satan really loves that one.

Book Description:

Considering she’s a girl who calculates everything, Addie Battes knew the statistical probability of being abducted in her lifetime—too bad she never analyzed the odds of falling in love with her captor.

While stopping at a crowded rest area one summer night, seventeen-year-old Addie accidentally catches a truck hijacking in progress. Desperate to rid the crime of its only witness, one of the thieves kidnaps Addie. Yet surprisingly, when a renegade thief attempts to silence her for good, Addie is saved by the very man who abducted her. Now, forced on board a cargo ship in the middle of the ocean, Addie finds herself surrounded by international smugglers who want nothing more than to throw her overboard.

All except the artistic and intriguing Charlie Hays, whose strange protectiveness convinces Addie to trust him, even when common sense tells her otherwise. Yet, despite her doubt, and his unrelenting temper, their relationship develops into something much more. But, Charlie’s scorned colleague has stowed away, and as he seeks revenge against his coworker, Addie and Charlie are forced to put their new love—and lives—at risk.

It’s probably wrong that I love the guy who is sort of the bad guy…right? That probably says some pretty bad things about me as a person. Wanted by Amanda Lance was a happy surprise. I had no idea I would enjoy the story as much as I did. Originally I chose to review this book because the cover is stunning and the blurb was interesting and I’m so glad I did because it surpassed any expectation I could have had for it.

Wanted follows 17-year-old Addie who is kidnapped by a group of thieves on the way back from dropping her brother off at an army base. Addie is smart, strong-willed and snarky, my favorite qualities in a main character. I really admire her curiosity in this story and her steal cojones. I swear she pushed the limits with the guys who took her, but her obvious connection with Charlie was probably my favorite part of this book.

Tell us a little bit about your book The Exemeus in 20 words or less.

Abeni: The Exemeus is about a boy, Dephon, who realizes that the government wants to kill him and the only person who can help him, Hyalee, is dead. The book is told from two different points of view, so you get to know a lot about both characters.

Folami: Clearly that’s more than twenty words, but being succinct isn’t an art we’ve mastered. Good thing we had an amazing editor.
