Excerpt:

The Witch of Bracken’s Hollow by Evan Winters

Standing in the backyard of the Unity Road Baptist Church Retreat, Damon Daugherty gazed out across the black waters of Deep Run Lake to the woods that ran into Bracken’s Hollow and for unknown miles beyond.

For the umpteenth time that day, Damon struggled with the strange feeling that he was somehow peering not just through space but backward through time. There he stood in the present on a chilly October day. The sound of laughter came from inside the lodge where his friends were preparing dinner in the kitchen.

Damon, on the other hand, labored with refuse. In each hand, he held a trash bag, both of which sagged heavily under the weight of discarded bottles, cigarette packages, and all the rest of the debris that had been left on the trails around the lake by local kids over the course of a long summer worth of secret parties in the woods.

Book Description:

As soon as I stepped onto the grounds of Amaris High, I knew I'd made a big mistake. I could never fit in at such a snobbish school – I was more IT girl than "it girl". But then I saw him.

Sam Spencer. My childhood best friend. But it couldn't be. Sam Spencer had died three years ago, on the night that changed everything. I need to know what happened, why he's suddenly not dead and is hanging out with a bunch of rich kids.

When the school is hit by a truth spell, it seems like the perfect chance to find out what Sam and his creepy new friends are hiding, but the weirder things get, the less I'm sure I want to know. Even for Sam, even for the free food, Amaris High might be more trouble than it's worth.

Excerpt:

The water danced in the fountain, and between beams of refracted light, they appeared.

There were four of them. Even in silhouette they were impressive – the girl with long, straight hair and just the right amount of curves; the boys tall and broad-shouldered. They emitted charisma like a beacon, confident and untouchable. One of the boys turned to another and his eyes flashed in the sunlight.

He had an ethereal type of beauty, but there was an edge to it, a wildness. Rather than moonlight, he seemed formed from a supernova, from the chaos of total destruction, and I could well believe that if you got too close to him, you’d be pulled in, you’d collapse on yourself.

Light (Dream Casters, #1) Review

Light (Dream Casters, #1) by Adrienne Woods
Age Group: Young Adult
Genre: Fantasy
Release Date: May 29th, 2015

Amazon

Book Description:

Mr. Sandman, send me a dream, ta da da da…..Seventeen year old Chastity Blake knows the Sandman is just a silly children’s story parents tell their children to get them to sleep. At least she thought it was, until the day a mysterious, light golden sand appeared in her hands during a high school prank that went horribly wrong. A sand that has the power to send anyone it touches into a deep, sound sleep.

Fearing she had lost her mind, Chastity soon discovers the shocking truth of her heritage – she is a Dream Caster. Chastity was never supposed to be raised on the Domain, or what humans call Earth and she is forced to return to her true birth place, Revera – the world of Dreams.

However, in Revera there is no balance between good, the Light Casters, and darkness, the Shadow Casters, and Chastity is caught square in the middle. She soon learns that there is no place for anyone containing both the light and the darkness within them, and the shocking truth that if anyone in Revera ever discovered her shadow self, Chastity would be thrown into the Oblivion – the world of Nightmares.

Dreams are always more than they seem, and this time Chastity is going to discover just how different they can be.

♥ ♥ ♥

I'm going to start right off the bat and say that I loved the first book in Adrienne Woods' Dream Caster series, Light. You know those stories of the Sandman and how he sprinkles his magic sand in your eyes to make you fall asleep and dream? Well imagine if that was real, but instead of one Sandman, there's a world of Dream Casters who can use their sand for a lot more than dreams.

That's the world that Woods introduces us to in Light. The main character is Chastity Blake, who goes by Chas. Chas has grown up and only known of our world (or the "Domain" as Casters call it) and is thrust into Revera, the world the Dream Casters live in. It is here that she learns that she can also wield sand. However, things in Revera aren't what they used to be, and Chas is determined to fix it while also keeping a secret of her own.

The mysterious stranger seems determined to keep her alive—and steal her heart. But Leo has a secret that is about to change everything and Sophia is about to learn that sometimes…your number is up

Excerpt:

When we made it to the living room Hercules began lapping up the puddles of water we left behind us. Leo yanked the gray blanket off of the armchair and wrapped it around me because I was suddenly shaking.

He moved a salt stone lamp out of his way and sat on top of the coffee table, motionlessly taking in my expression. Before he even spoke I just knew he was reading me all wrong. I felt like I could read him already too.

“I’m sorry. I’m so sorry, Sophia,” he groaned.

“For what? My idiotic carelessness or that you saved my life once again? You shouldn’t be sorry about either of those things.”

Book Description:

Sophia Bennett is looking forward to celebrating her eighteenth birthday with her best friend Angie.

After graduating high school and enjoying the last days of her summer vacation the most important things on her mind are getting ready for college and catching the eye of her high school crush Jake...at least, until the night of her birthday party.

Suddenly, Sophia is thrust into a world that she never knew existed and finds herself in the middle of an ancient struggle between good and evil.

Time is against her as she and her new friends struggle to take possession of a powerful magic before it falls into the wrong hands.

Can Sophia solve the mystery of the Lilith links in time to save her loved ones, or will the
enemy triumph and destroy all that she holds dear?

♥ ♥ ♥

My favorite type of fantasy is the type where the main character is new to the fantastical elements in the world. This way, the character is able to learn all about this new world that he or she has been introduced to, and the reader is able to learn about it right along with them. The author is able to build the world and make all of the rules for it in a natural way that doesn't seem forced or artificial in any way.

This is how J.L. Clark's first book in her Avalon Relics series, The Lilith Links is. Sophia Benett has lived a normal life for eighteen years, until her world gets flipped upside down at her eighteenth birthday party. All of a sudden, these beautiful strangers are in her life, her best friend isn't who she thought she was, her parents are missing, and Sophia is forced into a whole new world.

Excerpt:

I wish I could say I’d never witnessed a windshield shatter before, but I’d been in a terrible car accident a few years back, so I knew exactly what it looked and sounded like.

There’s a weird silence that happens immediately after something like that, in which everything seemed to occur in slo-mo. I forced my mouth to move.

“Gunshot!” I shouted, because I could see both Cal and Garrett looking wildly around, trying to process exactly what that noise was and what had just happened. “Bullet to car window! Over to the right.”

Book Description:

She tried to ignore them. But some things won’t be ignored.

Kat Preston doesn’t believe in ghosts. Not because she’s never seen one, but because she saw one too many. Refusing to believe is the only way to protect herself from the ghost that tried to steal her life. Kat’s disbelief keeps her safe until her junior year at McTernan Academy, when a research project for an eccentric teacher takes her to a tiny, private island off the coast of Connecticut.

The site of a grisly mystery, the Isle of Acacia is no place for a girl who ignores ghosts, but the ghosts leave Kat little choice. Accompanied by her research partner, Evan Kingsley, she investigates the disappearance of Cassie Mallory and Sebastian Radcliffe on their wedding night in 1886. Evan’s scientific approach to everything leaves Kat on her own to confront a host of unbelievables: ancestral curses, powerful spells, and her strange connection to the ghosts that haunt Castle Creighton.

But that’s all before Kat’s yanked through a magic portal and Evan follows her. When the two of them awaken 129 years in the past with their souls trapped inside the bodies of two wedding guests, everything changes. Together, Kat and Evan race to stop the wedding-night murders and find a way back to their own time—and their own bodies—before their souls slip away forever.

It’s been a while since I had some uninterrupted time to read and after taking a bit of a break I’m more than happy with the fact that The Girl Who Ignore Ghosts by K.C. Tansley was my first book back. This book follows Kat Preston as she does her best to unravel mystery from the past that she never saw coming. I’ve read a lot of books that involve magic and things, but I have to say I really like the approach that Tansley took with this book.

Kat doesn’t just one day start seeing ghosts, this is something that’s sort of been with her since she was young and the fact that she has to “not believe” in ghosts to keep herself safe is an interesting way to look at things. But all of that changes when the past and present collide.

Do you recall how your interest in writing originated or did you always just know you wanted to be a writer?

I’ve always made up stories in my head. I thought it was normal. Growing up an only child, I learned to amuse myself by reading. After I finished a great book, I didn’t want it to be over, so I’d imagine myself into the story and go on adventures with the characters. Every night before bed, I’d spend an hour playing in the storyworld inside my head. It was a chance to be anything and anyone I wanted.

Which came first for you, the characters or the plot?

With this book, it was the plot. The murder mystery at a castle and the time travel were there from day 1. This book is very plot driven. The characters of Evan and Kat changed a lot along the way, but the plot—the bones of the story stayed the same.

Is there anything you found particularly challenging when you were writing 'The Girl Who Ignored Ghosts'?

Excerpt:

“Is everything okay?” Ava asked.

Caleb smiled, but didn’t look at her. “Sure.”

“You seem . . . I don’t know . . . nervous?”

He glanced at her briefly. “Just doing my job.”

Ava snorted. “Your job is tutoring physics.”

“Call this moonlighting.”

Ava tucked her hands more deeply into her coat pockets as Caleb returned to his steady surveillance. She started to say something more, but forgot it immediately when Caleb stopped suddenly.

“Caleb?”

“Shhh . . .” He stepped in front of her, his head tilted to the side.

“What is it?”

He touched a finger to his lips, his body impossibly still.

Ava froze, pressed slightly against his back as she tried to peer over his shoulder. He stretched his hand behind him, as if blocking her from something, and his fingers curled slightly around her hip, stilling her movement.

A prickle of awareness ran over her skin, stealing her breath. For a long moment, the world seemed to slow around her, growing silent and still, and Ava closed her eyes, unsure what she was searching for, but feeling her consciousness reach out, calling out into the darkness.

Excerpt:

I’d texted Ronan; said I’d meet him at the Starbucks two blocks from his place. He’d been surprised but hadn’t baulked. That was the cool thing about older guys. They didn’t question why you wanted to meet in the early hours of the morning on a school night.

I practically ran the last few blocks, eager for answers. He was waiting for me outside the cafe, rubbing his hands together to keep warm. My heart did a funny little jig before I slapped it down with a hard dose of reality. The hot musician boyfriend could be a raving lunatic.

“Hey.” He opened his arms wide and I hesitated, hating the tiny frown that appeared between his eyebrows. By the time I slipped into his hug the damage had been done, our embrace stiff and stilted.

He released me. “What’s up?”

“Can we talk?”

I fired the gun.

Time slowed as the bullet spiraled toward his shoulder.

Another shot rang out, though I had no idea who had fired it.

My bullet pierced my target in the shoulder. It pushed him back, but it didn’t knock him off his feet. He released the girl, and her body crumpled to the ground. The second figure immediately crouched over her.

I fired at the man still on his feet, hitting him in the chest. His head snapped up, and he glared directly at me.

Shock assaulted my system. I sucked in air, my mind desperately searching for some logic to apply to the scene before me. His eyes glowed an eerie red, a luminous warning to stay back. Blood dribbled down his chin. I fired a third time, but his swift movements caused my bullet to miss its mark.

Excerpt:

My music teacher had described my voice as a beautiful, clear soprano with a haunting lilt. While my mother and others agreed— none of them knew it was because of Zanthiel. My dark faerie of music. He no longer controlled my voice. Yet here I was, on stage sweating at the possibility that I’d been wrong.

The pianist played the intro and I waited for my cue. My hands began to sweat and my heartbeat accelerated. Finally it arrived, and despite my reservations and the nausea that accompanied every stage performance, I began to sing. As the notes swelled the music inside me took hold and for a time I forgot where I was. The melody of “Think of Me” filled my soul, pushing all thoughts of Adrius and the veil and Venus aside. There was only me and the music. Each note in perfect pitch and every lyric remembered.

Mr. Smythe nodded his approval repeatedly, gesturing for me to expand and give even more.

I pushed myself further, and as I did, I felt another presence. As sure as I felt my own. The music took on a shape, a form, and though no one else could tell, I knew that I was no longer alone on stage. Zanthiel was here with me... inside me, adding his touch to my performance, and a depth to my voice. The back door of the auditorium opened and swung closed. Venus strolled in, and slid into a seat in the back row. Immediately, I stopped singing.

But it didn’t matter much after all.

My magic, perhaps knowing it was about to be used for the first time, was waiting as impatient as a child kept inside on a rainy day. Unlike those previous attempts, I was finally able to find it, grasp a tendril and tug lightly. It, whatever it was, unspooled and began to move towards my hands.

I looked up at Alexa, panic building in my chest, heart beating erratically as this energy moved through my body. It began to pool in my hands, where I should have been able to send it into the stone, but somehow it was blocked. My heart continued to race, getting faster and faster as the energy filled my hands. The pressure built until I was sure my hands would burst, when Alexa placed a hand on my wrist.

Book Description:

Senior year is supposed to be fun: boys, dances and graduation. It’s significantly harder to enjoy it when you’re dead.

Thanks to an innocent game of Truth or Dare, I wound up sleeping in a graveyard. Probably not the brightest thing I’ve ever done, but thanks to a couple of well-placed fangs, I’m here to tell the tale.

Vampires might stalk pop culture, but they’re just myths, right? Yeah. Not so much…

Everything seems a lot more difficult when you’re a nocturnal creature of the night, especially school. I was managing, but couldn’t keep it hidden from my friends. Steph decided that we should be cool, like superheroes, and fight crime.

I’m a vampire, not a hero. Living in a sleepy New England town, crime is a little harder to come by. At least it is until a serial killer moves into the area. He’s got the authorities stumped, but then again, the cops don’t have a teenage, blood-sucking, non-hero on their team. It doesn’t take long for me to discover the world is full of monsters. I may be one of them…but will I turn out to be the hero, or the killer everyone is looking for.

Excerpt:

I followed him for several miles to a ritzy neighborhood hidden away amongst the trees, most of the houses isolated from each other by space and forest. I slipped through the woods, following Alexander through several more turns to a three-story house with a wraparound porch. It was tucked back away from the street and surrounded by bare-branched hardwoods. He pulled into the driveway and parked to the side of the two-car garage. I hid and observed as he climbed out of his car, stopped, and looked around. He frowned, and I wondered if he knew he was being followed.

He stopped scanning the forest and moved closer to the house, and I followed him. This time of year there was no way I would find an open window, but I might be able to hear enough through one to find out more about him.

I slunk around, glancing in windows, catching glimpses of nice furnishings, spare decorations, and a lit fireplace. I ducked when I saw Alexander walk into the kitchen, and stretched out my senses to see if I could detect anyone else in the house.

It seemed like Alexander lived alone. I had almost expected Ann’s other friends to live with him as well, if they were actually connected to any of the strange things going on.

Book Description:

Fate is a twisted b*$#@, at least his was.

Was one soul worth the lives of millions? The quandary was one that Rydell King had no choice but to face.

No matter the answer, the truth remained—innocence was created to destroy him.

She was beautiful…extinguishing her to save his people seemed impossible, and maybe it was.

As an immortal, his focus was to destroy the curse upon his people, as he devoured the emotion that bore him—exaltation, no matter the cost. She made him question everything.

Mercy had never been crueler.

Excerpt:

Raven was not known for having a long attention span and apparently the Veil did not hinder her virtue, or curse, depending how you saw it. She heard music, a guitar.

Raven took a step toward it and as she did she felt a wave of electrical energy come over her. Her entire body was humming. She felt like she was waking up from a thick, languid dream. Like she was coming home. She had to get closer. Needed to get closer.
