Q:What writing device or trick most irritates you when reading a book? For example, if an author employs an omnipotent narrator that is sometimes considered bad form.

I am such a picky bitch sometimes haha so I have quite a few of these.

1. POV - I absolutely hate when author's switch back and forth from a dozen different points of view. It's like wow, pick one and stay with it because you're confusing the hell out of me. I also dislike when there no apparent transition it just stops abruptly and then you're somewhere else with someone else. If you want to write in first person, which personally I'm not crazy about since only a few author's can do that well, then stick with it and don't try to swap POV's it gets confusing and it makes people not want to read your book.

2. Pop Culture References - For some reason it bugs me how almost every YA book references Twilight. Don't get me wrong I enjoyed the series a lot, I've even re-read it once or twice, but I am not big on pop-culture references. Some are cute and some author's pull it off really well, but a lot of them are hit or miss.

3. Love Triangles - Hear me out on this. When you start off with a triangle or two guys interested in a girl that's fine. I get that. Like in Twilight or Death and the Girl Next Door, or Ember. But when you spend an entire book or two developing a relationship and then in the second or third book bring in a new guy and all of a sudden have the main character love him that is such a turn off. I'm sorry book or not I cannot believe after confessions of dying love and saving someone's life that you can just fall in love with someone else. Yes I'm talking about the Pandemonium Series. I was so annoyed when she all but forgot about Alex and fell in love with the new kid who's name I can't remember. Love Triangles can not take the place of plot people. Come of with a better plot device to give a couple problems.

I'm going to stop at three before I loo super mean or something. What about you guys? What are some plot devices that drive you nuts?

  1. Totally agree about the multiple POV thing! One of my favorite series was runied because all of a sudden in the second book there was like 8 POVs!

  2. Love triangles bother me too! No matter who they choose, you always end up feeling bad for the other one. It's so sad! Great answer :)

  3. Love triangles can be annoying, but other times I do like them when they are done right. Other times it seems like the love triangle is there just for the sake of having a love triangle and that is annoying.

Changing pov's are annoying too when they aren't done right. I think authors need to give you obvious clues as to when there's a new narrator and let us know who it is by speech patterns or acknowledging another character.

As to pop culture references, I like them. Of course they have to be done right and what not.

  4. Haha wow, I can see you're quite passionate about this subject!

I've never minded love triangles but you're right. It would be incredibly annoying if they brought in a triangle a book or two later!

  6. I am so with you on the love triangles. Sometimes they make sense and they work. Other times it is just obnoxious!

  7. I'm usually fond of love triangles, but not when the new guy's only purpose is to cause problems for the sake of the plot.

  8. Oh, I agree with your points. I don't care for cliffhangers, but mostly I hate anything that happens due to coincidence. I like logical steps to a conclusion.

  9. @Cassy Wrage Right? It's like whoa, multiple personality much? Pick one! Because you're hurting my head haha.

Thanks for following, heading over to your blog now! :)

  10. @Jessica (Peace Love Books) Haha I only like love triangles in very rare cases, but since most writers use it just to cause trouble in a main pairing it's bothersome. It's like can't you be more original and find another reason to cause tension in the relationship???

Haha and yes, you inevitably feel bad for the party who doesn't get the girl especially if both characters are well liked.

    Thanks for stopping by! :)

  11. @Jessica@a GREAT read Agreed. When love triangle aren't just there as a plot device to cause tension in a relationship then they can work and actually be pretty decent, but most author's fail in the execution.

    Agreed.

Hahah I like a lot of things when they're done right, unfortunately they aren't done right often haha.

    Thanks for stopping by. :)

  16. @Julie I don't mind cliffhangers so much as long as it's explained and the story is wrapped up at some point or I get cranky haha.

    Thanks for following! :)

  21. OMG, I dislike love triangles so much! I mean really. I haven't read Pandemonium series, but I am glad I haven't because I would had hated that! Hated!

I complain about alternating POVs on my FF. Sometimes I will admit it works (I love Pushing the Limits) but usually I don't. I person first person from one specific person, or third person. :)

  23. Thanks for letting me know about my comments! Followed back. omg. I completely agree with you about Pandemonium. And his name was Julian. Gah. I hated Julian. Alex and Lena were together 5ever. Okay? And then Julian just had to go in and ruin it all! Haha. Thanks again!

  24. Oh and can I say, your theme is so pretty! Where'd you get it from?

  25. @quinnsbooknook Right? It's like hi, there are other plot devices out there people. Sigh.

Same here there are some really talented author's who can pull it off, but honestly most author's don't do it right and it turns out confusing instead like in Shadows.

    Thanks for stopping by! :)

  29. Hello! New follower. I love your blog name!! Super cute and definitely memorable.

I also loved your rant about love triangles. Hilarious and completely true. It was frustrating when she fell in love with the new guy in Pandemonium but authors enjoy finding ways to mess with you and keep the story interesting. Thanks for sharing.

Also, I am giving away a Kindle or Nook (winners choice) on my blog if you are interested. The contest ends tomorrow at midnight!
