Q:Do you mind books with similar ideas to other books? Similar concepts, backgrounds, retellings or pulled-to-publish fanfic?
Yes, I do mind. It's one thing to use someone's characters and tell an original story with fanfiction because you're not claiming to own those characters you're just borrowing them for a little while to tell your own story. I don't even mind some retellings, because sometimes there's a really good twist thrown in or an interpretation that you never would have imagined, but still kind of fits. But flat out stealing the idea from another book or only changing a few things is terrible. I hate that. But what I dislike even more than that is publishers who publish those books that are practically a copy of whatever book they copied. It's times like that I feel all they can see is the money it might make them instead of how honest readers will look at them when they see a book that's practically a carbon copy of another book.
Well I don't mind in the sense that it some of the same ideas. The way I explained it on my blog is in the general sense. Like books with vampires saving the world. A theme, I don't mind repeating themes because I usually see the differences between the books because the authors tell them differently.
ReplyDeleteBut if it is the same story told twice from different authors I mind.
Here's my Follow Friday
Have a GREAT weekend!
Old Follower :)
Hey Cori! Just stoping by to follow you back, via GFC. I love your blog, it's so girly and nice. :D
ReplyDeleteI agree with you about the fact that books that are carbon copies shouldn't be published, but I don't mind books with the same theme as each other, like vampires, faeries, dystopian novels etc. because each author has their own way of developing these ideas.
ReplyDeleteThanks for checkin out My FF, new follower via GFC :)
Samantha @ the secret life of a bookworm
@Jessica@a GREAT read Some of the same concepts are okay, I just don't like reading the same exact thing over and over again lol.
ReplyDeleteThanks for stopping by.
@That Girl Reads Haha thanks! Yay for follow backs. It's totally girly, which is so weird for me haha. :)
ReplyDelete@Samantha Stewart Hey Samantha, yeah I just realized that I didn't write what I meant haha. I don't mind similar themes because I have a niche and I mostly stay in that niche with books, it's just if I'm reading something and going 'wait haven't I read this before' LOL then something is not right. :)
ReplyDeletei tooootally agree with you!
ReplyDeleteTrish - My Follow Friday
I don't mind the same ideas or retellings, but I agree that stealing the story shouldn't be okay. Great answer :)
ReplyDeleteHere's my FF!
I totally agree with you. I don't mind fanfiction because a) people are upfront about their use of someone else's characters and b) They're not likely to be making money off it. Making money out of someone else's ideas isn't being an author really is it?
ReplyDeleteThanks for stopping by, following you back via Linky :)
I don't really mind as long as each book has a unique voice.

@Trish Yay haha :)
ReplyDelete@Jessica (Peace Love Books) yeah similar ideas with twists and stuff is okay, but If I'm reading the same things I'm just like what? LOL
ReplyDelete@Faith Exactly. I don't mind fanfition for that reason. No one is making money, plus at times their original stories for characters that aren't there's are better then the ones told on TV haha :)
ReplyDelete@Tanya Patrice Unique is good. :)
ReplyDeleteI know what you mean! And I totally agree! I haven't read much of re-tellings of fan-fiction.Though Twilight did start my love YA so I do enjoy some of the similar concept books! :)
ReplyDeleteI'm a new follower.
You have a lovely blog btw! Here's My FF
@Emma Emma thanks for the follow! Haha yeah I enjoyed Twilight too! :D
ReplyDeleteThat is a great answer! New follower via e-mail and twitter!
ReplyDeleteThe same idea, written the same way is a no-no. I love re-tellings though.
ReplyDeleteThanks for stopping by and for the follow, I'm following back :)
@Alisa Selene Thanks so much and thanks for stopping by! :)
ReplyDelete@Liza (Reading with ABC)
ReplyDeleteI totally agree!
THanks for following back! :)
Great answer. I agree. I dislike that publishers sometimes decide to publish a book just because the concept and the idea has been well sold before, rather that putting first the new and fresh ideas.
ReplyDeleteThanks for following! I'm following back :)
@ Pause Time
@Kar.-
ReplyDeleteExactly, it's just not right!
Thanks for following back! :)
I agree. It IS a bit unfair when another person benefits from another person's hardwork.
ReplyDeleteThanks for stopping by the blog! :) New follower.
Louisse @ The Soul Sisters
@Louisse Hey there! It definitely is!
ReplyDeleteThanks for following back! Have a good one. :)
Totally true! Thanks for stoppin' by! Following you back :)
ReplyDeleteKeely @ Realms of an Open Mind
Beautiful blog layout! But I agree totally. If you're just copying the ideas, what's the point? I've seen SO many books out recently that I thought were Twilight or Fifty Shades of Grey because the covers were practically the same. Seriously?
ReplyDeleteFollowing!
