Excerpt:

Rochelle closed her eyes and drew a deep breath, then moved into her warm-up routine. She hadn't had the time to do any kick-boxing for awhile, but already her body hummed in anticipation of the challenge.

Johnny was not her opponent, but the cancer that had invaded her body. No battle was more important than this one. No prize more vital: her life.

Her first moves were simple. A few easy punches before she bobbed and danced away, though there was no need for defense as Johnny threw no punches. If only the disease was as yielding. Instead it had snuck up and attacked without warning. Rochelle jabbed with her right hand and followed with a punch from her left.

Adrenaline pumped through Rochelle's body as the familiar moves flexed and worked her muscles, and brought a smile to her face. Then she lifted first one knee and the other, followed by a series of alternating punches. Right, left, right...

A vision of the damning spots in the x-rays filled her head, and Rochelle delivered another combination of kicks to Johnny's mid-section. In her mind, the lumps dissolved a little more each time she made contact.

She threw a knee, followed by a side-kick, and another spot disappeared from her mind's eye. Rabbit punches with her right hand eliminated a few more.

Rochelle kicked and punched until the vision in her head was clear of spots and fatigue was claiming her body, sapping her energy as it spread from her arms, down her torso, and turned her feet to leaden weights. She fell against Johnny in a clinch, and he supported her as her body went limp. Spent and sweaty, Rochelle surrendered to the exhaustion claiming her.

Author Bio:

I'm a crazy optimist whose rose-colored glasses have bent frames and cracked lenses. When life kicks me in the teeth, I find miracles and lessons I refused to learn an easier way.

In fact, I live with a small herd of miracles in the furry forms of dogs, who are constantly trying to teach me to forgive, to play more, and to love without limits.

I write about people who find courage and integrity in the darkest times of their lives, who rescue stray dogs and kittens, who find a person they would willingly give their lives for, and who make their little corners of the world a better place.

People have remarked my stories "aren't what they expected." With rose-colored glasses firmly in place, I take that as a compliment.

    1. Sibling desperation! When I started writing the first book of this series, about an woman with seven overly protective brothers, it soon became obvious the brothers needed their own love interests to get them out of their sister's hair. So Johnny got his own story and his own happily ever after. :)

Thanks for the kudos on the cover. I'm also a graphic designer and love designing book covers!

    1. Hi, Lana! Glad you enjoyed the excerpt. Much as I love the idea of kick-boxing, I decided I should stick with yoga until I'm a bit more flexible. Some of those kicks and moves are amazing!

    1. Hi, Ami! This is book #7 of my Halo Legacy Series, but can be read as a standalone. I usually start reading series books in the middle--not intentionally, it just happens that way. So I was careful to include enough info in each of my Halo Legacy books that a reader won't be lost if the series isn't read in order.

  13. Did you have to research a lot for this novel?

    1. Hi, Anas! I seem to research a lot for all my books! Though the basic "world" of the Halo Legacy Series is set in the small fictional town of Halo, Oregon, each of the characters are different and keep coming up with experiences, hobbies, and/or careers uniquely their own. This sends me off on a research frenzy, as the clock keeps ticking toward the book deadline. However, I've learned so much through research, and really enjoy that aspect of writing, so I grumble about time as I happily research something new. LOL!

    1. Hi, Paty! Feel free to jump around, then let me know if I included enough info in each book so you don't get lost reading them out of order. That's the way I usually end up reading series of books. :)
