“You can come by and have some supper with Sally and I if you like.”
“No thanks. I’ve got plans.” I lie. I haven’t had plans for months. My evening meal consists of takeout from the Chinese place down the street that doubles as a doughnut shop in the morning.
We drive in silence. I watch the trees whip by in a blur until Jimmy slows and turns into my driveway.
That’s when I see her.
She sits inside her Jeep with her head resting against the glass, eyes shut, blood red hair pulled to one side trailing down her shoulder. Jimmy lets out a whistle.
“Didn’t know you had those kind of plans. Boy, you’ve been holdin out on me.”
I don’t reply and jump out of the car, walking towards her. She abruptly opens her eyes, sensing me and gives me a big smile as she rolls down her window.
“You surprised to see me?” She asks. I hear Jimmy’s tires on the gravel, the hum of the engine pulling away.
I feel mute. Like the wind has been knocked out of me but at the same time like I can breathe for the first time in years. “That’s an understatement.” I run a hand thru my hair shaking off sawdust.” So what are you doing here?”
Mara opens the door and steps out of the Jeep in a pair of yellow galoshes. “It’s supposed to rain later,” She says as I look down. “I’m here to make you a business proposition.”

Somewhere good. Somewhere pure.”
