Book Description:

Eve used to be an ordinary girl, from an ordinary town, with ordinary dreams, but her dreams rapidly turn into nightmares when one grave mistake leaves her a little less than human and a lot less average.

Eve’s not quite the same girl she used to be. She desperately clings to her humanity as new desires, new abilities, and new urges take over with each passing day.

Eve Brenner: Zombie Girl is a tale that takes you on an emotional and terrifying journey as Eve struggles to cope with her new life and find a cure for her strange illness before time runs out. She desperately clings to her humanity as she tries to control the monster she knows is lurking inside her.

Turns out living was the easy part.

Where did the idea for the story come from?

Eve was born a very long time ago, in a dream. When I woke up from the dream I became obsessed with sketching her. Initially she came across as a sort of undead superhero. During my adolescent years I yearned for strong female leads in literature and film, but I often felt many female leads were either lacking or nonexistent.

She was my superhero for the next few years. I would spend time doodling and creating comic strips about her adventures. As the years went Eve’s story evolved into something less super and more human. I know what you’re thinking…it’s odd to say a zombie story is in fact a very human story. This is why I love zombies, they’re a metaphor for many things.

In Eve’s case the virus is a plague on her humanity, something stopping at nothing until the virus takes her humanity from her. This sort of notion starts with fairytales, which I am also heavily influenced by, the fact that good can win against all odds, the fact that hope can remain, you may even say “the force is strong in this one.”

I’m a bit of a fangirl of many things and as you read the Zombie Girl Saga you can see my desire to create a hero. She’s definitely not a perfect one, over time I learned that superheroes aren’t much fun unless they’re flawed, so Eve evolved into something new. I don’t want to give too much away before reaching the end of the series, but Eve has quite the destiny and this is where the zombie tale differs from many others.

What was the hardest part about plotting it all out? Did she follow a formula, did she write the book in a certain order or skip around?

It took me many years to finally sit down and write the story that had been lying around in my head wanting to be freed. So what happens when you wait over a decade to let the words out? Well it’s sort of like opening a flood gate, the words poured out faster than I could type them. There was no plotting it all out, I simply let the words flow and once the feverish typing had finished and the first book was done, I sat back and thought, oh wow, that was exhilarating, what next?

What came next was writing notes on how the series would play out, eventually I settled on four books to properly tell the tale. I wrote the beginning and endings to each of the four books. I suppose I just like to see where a tale will begin and where it needs to end before I can really start writing the rest.

What was most fun about plotting out the series was the character notes. I treat it like a casting call for a film and I designate each character an actor, it makes it a lot of fun to envision the actors in these roles I created, and after all isn’t writing all about a little indulgence and imagination?

I think the most difficult part of the writing process is finding the time. I’m a mom, I also work full time, and now I’ve taken on the new role of author. It’s hard to find the time to write, and typically the time you have available is the evening. I’ve learned that if you love something, you’ll be willing to give up sleep for it. So yes…between writing and my son, I’m sort of a vampire at night, but it is all worth it.
