Book Blitz: Crossed Lines

Crossed Lines By Lana Sky
Publication date: August 14, 2019
Buy Link: Amazon
Genres: Adult, Coming of Age, Women’s Fiction
Summary:
Psychopath. Borderline. Crazy.

Seventeen-year-old Maryanne Mayweather wears each term like a badge of pride. Expelled from her twelfth boarding school, she lands on the doorstep of her flighty aunt Elaine and Elaine’s husband James, one more screw-up away from being made a ward of the state.
Once a successful author, the last thing James Thorne wants is to care for his wife’s bratty teenage niece, especially with his marriage falling apart.
When Maryanne crafts an elaborate plan to defame and destroy him, they both discover that words are more powerful than either of them could imagine.
And as their relationship goes down a path neither envisioned, the consequences are swift and far-reaching.
Some lines weren’t meant to be crossed.

★★★★★ “It is more, so much more than you’d expect. This is a gripping, thought provoking read that easily and quickly ensnares you in Maryanne and James’ story. A story that pushes boundaries, buttons and crosses big red lines of both the reader and the characters involved.” ~ Amazon Reviewer

★★★★★ “Reading Crossed Lines was a bit like riding a roller-coaster. The slow build of the story line was like the clicking and clacking of the coaster while on it’s way to the top – a false sense of knowing what lied ahead. I was so ignorant of what truly waited for me just a few clicks away.
Once the story peeked I couldn’t put it down -trapped in the pages – my lungs fighting to breathe – then slowly the rhythmic click followed by the clack returned and with it my breath. I relaxed believing that the worst was over.
It wasn’t.” ~ Amazon Reviewer

★★★★★ “It rocked my world, my heart and my brain. I can’t recommend this enough if you are down for an unconventional ride for one of the TOP READS OF THE YEAR!!” ~ Amazon Reviewer
EXCERPT:

“You need me, huh?” he taunts against my mouth, sounding so, so angry. “Do you want to ruin my life that badly? Fine, then. Get me fired. Go ahead.” A hiss escapes his lips when I don’t pull away like he wants me to. Like he needs me to.

Excerpt:

“Are you late for something?” I was so focused on Tanya that I hadn’t even noticed that Ben Winters had walked up behind me.

I turned to face him.  My palms started to sweat.  I tried to covertly wipe them on my pants while praying he didn’t shake hands when he met people.  “Not really.  I’m just waiting for Tanya.”
“I think you may be waiting a while.” He gestured to Tanya with his head.  I spun around and saw her walking out the door.

“Tanya,” I called loudly.  “I need to talk to you.”

She held up her hand to me but didn’t glance back.  “I have a few things to take care of.  Catch up later.”

I looked back up at Ben and swallowed hard.  “Guess you’re right.”  I stared into his eyes.  They were a deep chestnut brown.  I forced myself to blink and look away.  His shoulders were at my eye level.  My head would fit perfectly into a shoulder as he rested his chin on my head.  The rest of our body parts would fit together nicely too.  I blinked again.

“Can members on different levels interact inside the club?”

“Yes. And outside as well. But there are time limitations.” Missy smiled and looked at them both supportively. It was time to kick the sales into high-gear.

“And they are?” Levreece and Hannah couldn’t help but be completely awed by Dante as he strutted by the office in an outfit that showed off his incredible physique. Hannah was taken back when she realized that he was even better looking in person than he’d appeared on TV.

“Fifteen minutes for each individual who is on a different level every two weeks.” Missy gave Dante a passing glance. “It helps incentivize you. Also, if you are only working on your own level you won’t be as distracted towards achieving your fitness goals.”

Excerpt:

His mouth twisted into a self-deprecating smile and he brushed his thumb across my cheek. I almost closed my eyes at the calm his touch brought me. I ached to rest my cheek in his palm, to let him soothe me. His hand fell away and I mourned the loss of contact, the loss of part of myself to want and wishes. I felt myself splitting, fracturing, dividing right there, and glanced at Will to see if he noticed.

Book Description:

When twenty-five-year-old Pru Anderson—braless, pajama-clad, and clutching her cat, Chuck—is rescued from her burning Los Angeles apartment, the thing that scares her most is meeting the neighbors. New people make her hide in the bathroom, counting by sevens, but when her home is destroyed, she must turn strangers into friends … or crawl back to the controlling parents she only recently escaped.

What would her idol, Pepper Hathaway, do? That’s a no brainer: the detective-slash-supermodel heroine from Pru's favorite TV series would take no prisoners while looking fierce in a tankini and stilettos. So when the chance comes up to live with playwright Ellen, Pru sets aside her fears and goes for it.

Thus begin the adventures a girl who's never had a job, a friend, or a first kiss. Swept into Ellen's whirlwind life, Pru begins to build her own, as director's assistant for a new play, muse to brooding actor Blake, and possible love interest to adorably neurotic neighbor, Adam.

Only one thing can derail Pru's exhilarating journey. Well, actually, it's two things—and they're in a car headed straight for LA to torpedo her life. When the past that nearly destroyed her comes calling, who will she be: a Prudence or a Pepper?

Excerpt:

As the rich CaraMellow ice cream slipped along my tongue, I popped a few potato chips in my mouth for contrast. Ah, the soothing combination of sweet, salt, cream, and crunch.

No good. Its magic wasn’t working.

Shifting my size 16 tush around on the sofa, I focused on the TV. It played an old episode from Model Cop, my favorite show ever on the Wholesome Family Channel.

Today, the show’s awesome heroine, Pepper Hathaway, was tracking down a serial killer in between fittings for a runway show at Fashion Week. It was hard to juggle her two jobs as a police detective and supermodel, but she excelled at both. Pepper ended every episode with a wink to the camera and her life motto: Remember, folks. Do Good, Look Good!

She was amazing.

I sighed. I bet Pepper didn’t get job rejections like the one I’d had today. Dear Loser, the letter said. We are relieved to say we cannot offer you the position of Low-Level Proofreading Gnome at our crummy little start-up online encyclopedia. No matter how unknown and undesirable our company is, you are more so.

Sincerely,

Executive Drone

Okay, so they didn’t use those exact words, but it’s what they meant. As I lifted my spoon, caramel dribbled down the front of my flannel nightgown. I scraped it off with a potato chip and ate it.

Book Description:

Andy Evans is on the move. For six long, lonely years, he’s been running from his past, leaving his family and his life as a drug-addicted rock star far behind. His latest move takes him to the sleepy seaside town of Oamaru, New Zealand, to sell cigar-box guitars to tourists.

The only running he’ll need to do will be training for half-marathon in nearby Dunedin. But when Andy sets eyes on Steampunk HQ, Oamaru's main tourist attraction, he realises his days of running might not be over, especially if a certain Steampunk fan from his past catches up with him.

Annie Martin is on the cusp of great success. Her career as a Steampunk academic is about to take off, as long as she can convince one disagreeable, New Zealand-based Professor to sign up to the anthology she’s putting together. Thankfully, Annie is a master at maintaining her poise and few people, no matter how nasty, can rattle her. Not any more. In fact, it’d been a good six years since anyone had gotten under her skin, after her best friend’s brother had vanished into thin air.

When Annie finds her future career on a collision course with her secret past, Andy Evans is the last person she expects to find tangled up in the mess. With a vengeful drug-dealer or two hot on his heels, and a vindictive academic determined to ruin her credibility, can Annie bring Andy back to his family before it’s too late? Annie and Andy are used to being alone, but if they don’t work together, there’ll be much more at stake than her livelihood and his sobriety.

♥ ♥ ♥

Excerpt:

Annie charged down the park, running parallel to the competitors and dodging the spectators. As the finish line came into view, the crowd thickened. She slowed and pushed her way through, determined this time. When she reached the recovery area, where the runners who’d finished were pacing, an official held up a hand to stop her.

‘Not that way, miss,’ he said. Behind him a temporary fence separated the competitors from the crowd.

Annie followed his direction, scanning for a way to slip past. The second the official was distracted by another punter, she jumped the fence and dashed into the gathering group of runners. She didn’t have much time.

Even in regular clothes she would’ve been conspicuous, but in her Victorian skirts and corset, she stood out like, well, like someone from Victorian England had been dropped at the finish line of a twenty-first-century marathon. Most of the runners were walking in circles, shaking their legs, breathing heavily. Some were lying on their backs, chests rising and falling, eyes closed. One was bent over, hands on his knees, head down. The only runner with a beard.

Excerpt:

“Now,” Tonya said, “As you know, I have been calling for an independent audit of Westbury’s books. At first, I simply thought this was a good practice. I never dreamed that something could be wrong. But the more I requested and pushed for one, the more the Mayor and the other Council Members balked and stalled and misdirected the conversation.”

“I grew up the oldest child in a large family,” she continued. “I’ve heard plenty of wild excuses and tall tales in my time. My mother always knew when one of us was lying, and I guess I’ve inherited her nose for nonsense.” At this, a chuckle rippled through the crowd. “I felt like I was back in my mother’s kitchen with my brothers when these guys were making excuses to avoid an audit,” she said.

The Original Posers

I have always thought “pose” a nice word - firm, artistic, even stately. For instance, one poses for a photograph. One poses to model clothing, or for an artist’s brush.

A few years ago, my kids started using the word “poser.” Being the inquisitive and sharp-witted person that I am, I quickly picked up on the sarcastic nuance. Further scrutiny revealed that “poser” meant one who pretends to be something he is not.

So I kind of got used to that.

But last Thursday changed everything. I stumbled over the true meaning of the word when I accidentally took a yoga class.

I went to the gym anticipating an interval-cardio class, but I’d looked at the wrong schedule. The class about to begin was “Bodyflow” which is actually yoga with a few other things thrown in that I cannot pronounce. It included mats and bare feet.

Book Description:

Being the niece of the biggest star in the world isn't easy--especially when someone is trying to kill you.

Nikki Solange is a small town Tennessee girl. When she hits Hollywood and tries to become a movie Producer, she's in for the culture shock of her life--and finding a D-list actor turned up-and-coming director floating face down in his Beverly Hills swimming pool is the least of it. Now Nikki must walk the gauntlet that is Hollywood and try to stay alive because someone from Nikki's hard-scrabble past is out to make sure that she ends up dead.

Pretending to be a Hollywood playboy film producer is easy when one of the world's richest men is backing you.

Ex Marine sniper Rush Nelson is back from his final tour in Afghanistan and is now a security specialist for one of the world's richest men, media mogul Ted Robinoff. Backed by his boss, Rush has a solid cover-story that includes some serious Armani threads, a pulse-pounding car, and a limitless expense account. All to protect Robinoff, his business interests, and Robinoff's family, which includes Ted's superstar wife Celeste 'Cici' Solange and her pain-in-the-ass niece Nikki. Rush must achieve his directive without ruining his cover. Easy--except for one problem--Nikki Solange. Rush is falling for her.

When your mission is security, falling for the person you’re meant to protect is the number one rule not to break.

♥ ♥ ♥

Excerpt:

Rush was screwed. Every which way. He looked over his shoulder, away from the full moon that cast a full glow across the Ojai Valley and toward the girl who slept in the bed. Her face was relaxed in the moonlight, a pale alabaster with her pretty rosebud lips still bee-stung from his rough kisses and her wild hair a fiery halo that framed her face.

Nikki got to him. Her combination of naïveté, innocence, bravado, and pain-in-the-ass nature got to him, pulled him tight, closer than he should have been or ever expected to be. This was not what Ted Robinoff had in mind when he’d told Rush to get close.

A sick feeling clenched through Rush’s gut. No, Ted hadn’t intended that Rush should bed Ted’s niece. A deep inhale of breath pulsed through Rush. What was this? What had he managed to do—his weakness to this silly, sad sort of girl would cost him his job, might cost him his cover, might cost him his entire career.

Clare's father, who'd been talking to another man in blue, glanced at her, and Clare huddled down deeper into the big green armchair. Her dad didn't come to her but rather went to her mom, sank down beside her and wrapped his arm around her. Then he spoke to the officer. "Our daughter, Lynnie, is three. She would never go outside into the dark on her own."

♥ ♥ ♥

Excerpt:

It was Monday, later afternoon; Cleo sat at the nearly empty bar, celebrating the last day of school by munching on the only salad on the menu, a surprisingly good Caesar with grilled chicken, and sipping on a pint of Sierra Nevada Pale Ale. Nick was taking drink orders at a table near the back, from a group of young men dressed in button-down shirts and khakis – a group from the same office, she guessed. She glanced at the man at the end of the bar. He was here the other night, she remembered. He’d been reading a newspaper. This afternoon he sipped green tea, occasionally twisting the cup in a circle.

She stole glances at him in the mirror. He was handsome in a rakish kind of way. Did anyone use the word rakish anymore, she wondered? If not, they should.
