But human wars are insignificant compared to the darkness gathering unseen. Memories of lives she never lived flash through Jinji's thoughts, hinting at a past that cannot be repeated. A mysterious phantom visits Rhen, carrying cryptic messages of the future. And somewhere out there, the shadow continues to lurk in silence.

Excerpt:

Jinji has just been freed from the dungeons of Rayfort and was brought into a finely decorated room to wait and see who ordered her release.

The entry swung open, and there he stood. Commanding. Taking up the entire frame of the doorway, hair just as bright as Jinji remembered, eyes just as sparkling.

All breath left her body and she stood speechless, still not sure if she was awake. Rhen looked at her with an expression Jinji couldn't read. Confusion. Horror. Sympathy. Longing. All of them or none of them, she couldn’t decide.

Jinji watched, waiting for him to disappear, to wink out of existence just like her illusions. But he seemed so solid. Seconds ticked by but the room felt frozen in time.

“What?” I looked past them and saw Zoe and Blake. I ran to them.

Excerpt:

Reese loosened his hold enough for my circulation to start back up, and the blood rushing to my palm felt like needles dancing across it. I rubbed it with the thumb of my other hand, and Reese’s gaze followed the motion.

“We’re leaving,” he said, his voice harsh.

No. No way in hell was I walking out of here with a pissed-off vampire.

That’s how cops got dead.

Instead, I took a step backwards and pulled myself up onto a barstool. Reese’s upper lip curled, revealing a fang, and I held out my hands placatingly.

“Hear me out,” I said.

I didn’t really know if I could trust him, this cowboy-vampire I had been thrown together with. He was only meant to be an informant, my visits to see him at the Blood House a cover for him to pass information to me.

Book Description:

The age-old balance of light and dark will always find a way to be restored. At times it comes in the form of non-discriminate karma or the heavy hand of divine will. At other times that balance comes in the form of a single, teenage girl.

My name is Fallon. I am different. I am special. My essence moves in a cadence unknown to the other Auras at the House of Eventide. It was born of the intricate dance of the moon's opposing forces; retract and advance, embrace and release.

The brazen energy of the sun preys at the edges of my being; fraying its delicate balance and scorching my heart into submission. Only under the calming cover of night, can my essence shine freely.

My true identity must be kept secret at all costs. My very existence is a threat to the Aura Order I pretend to be a part of. Should my web of lies unravel, they would stop at nothing to destroy me. I am the sole descendant of the light moon goddess, Luna . I have been Chosen. This is my story.

Book Description:

Save me and I'll save you...

My name is Calla Price. I’m eighteen years old, and I’m one half of a whole. My other half-- my twin brother, my Finn-- is crazy.

I love him. More than life, more than anything. And even though I’m terrified he’ll suck me down with him, no one can save him but me.

I’m doing all I can to stay afloat in a sea of insanity, but I’m drowning more and more each day. So I reach out for a lifeline.

Dare DuBray.

He’s my savior and my anti-Christ. His arms are where I feel safe, where I’m afraid, where I belong, where I’m lost. He will heal me, break me, love me and hate me.

He has the power to destroy me.

Maybe that’s ok. Because I can’t seem to save Finn and love Dare without everyone getting hurt.

Why? Because of a secret.

A secret I’m so busy trying to figure out, that I never see it coming.

You won’t either.

"There is nothing quite so terrifying as the dissension of the human mind into insanity." - Calla Price.

I don’t think I’ve ever read something this amazing before. I have read a ton of books but Nocte by Courtney Cole blew my mind. Nocte follows 18-year-old Calla Price as she does the unthinkable and attempts to deal with not only her mother’s death, but a mentally unwell brother all the while living in a secluded funeral home near the water.

I cannot begin to express my severe love for this book. I’ve never read anything by Courtney Cole before Nocte because none of her previous works drew me in, but the second I read the description for this book I knew I had to read it and good god it didn’t disappoint.

Nocte is incredibly well written, both the attention to details in the story, the setting drew me in to the point where I literally couldn’t put it down and I think I had a mini heart attack when the Kindle got down to 10 percent battery. I love Dare, like I loved him in the beginning of the story with his mystery and slightly sarcastic nature. But by the time I got to the end of the story…he’s literally my favorite person in the world.

"The Spirit Heir" by Kaitlyn Davis pretty much picks up where the last book left off. Rhen and Jinji are back in Rhen's kingdom and they are dealing with the reproductions of what happened when the shadow came to court and a war was started in Rayfort.

One thing that I had trouble with with "The Shadow Soul", the first book in Davis's "A Dance of Dragons" series, was that it was a bit hard for me to get into the story at first. There was a lot of world building (which is always a necessary evil) and getting to know the characters, but that didn't happen with "The Spirit Heir". Maybe it's because I was already familiar with the characters after reading the first book and I was just genuinely interested in what they would do next, but I was engrossed in the story from the beginning.
