Confused, Ronnie realizes the only way to discover the truth is to trust her heart. Together, Phoenix and Ronnie devise a plan to stop their corrupt government and preempt the dangerous rebel coup which is approaching. But when their plan goes awry, will Ronnie be strong enough to save Phoenix, her country, and herself?

Excerpt:

“What if the Devil doesn’t know he’s the Devil?” I ask.

Phoenix shakes his head, confused.“What?”

“Why? Why does the bad I’ve done have to define me?”

“Because you’re a murdering sadist,” he snaps back at me.

“No, I am not.” I clench my teeth, standing my ground. I am tired of these labels I am suddenly wearing. “I never, I mean never knew what happened to those girls I led to the Lettings. I am so very sorry I played any role in this vile enterprise in which we exist, but I was clueless.

Maybe I’m ignorant, or downright stupid, but I would rather have been dead than be responsible for hurting anyone. And before you go throwing malicious names around, maybe it’s time you consider maybe you’re wrong…? What if you kidnapped and tortured me in the name of a revolution that is wrong?”

Excerpt:

Our server returns and there’s an awkward silence as he places down our drinks. He begins to leave, but I call out to him before he does. “Excuse me, but, do you—I don’t know how to ask. You see, it’s my Elevation Day and I, do you—”

“Do I regret not getting zapped?” he responds.

Mom chokes on her cup of coffee. “Rose. What a rude thing to ask.”

“It’s fine,” the boy says as he brings himself down to eye level. “Nah. Not for a moment.”

I’m surprised at his lack of hesitation. “Never worry about what might have happened?”

“Curious? Perhaps. Worry? Never. Look, this is a big day for you, but I’ve got a piece of advice. Don’t forget that it’s your life. No one else’s.”

He gives a quick nod, stands up, and walks away. My insides glow warm. Mr. Roberts gives me that look. As if judging my every move, down to the molecular level. I sink down in my seat.

“What did you expect him to say?” he asks. “That he hates his life? He has to cope with this. Working in this dump night after night, serving—”

“Lots of people don’t need GEMO to do what they want.” And I’m right. All I’ve ever wanted to do is work as a botanist somewhere, growing flowers and planting trees. While some abilities wouldn’t hurt, it’s not like anyone gets a magical green thumb or something.

Excerpt:

He grips my arm at the elbow and escorts me inside. As we walk up three flights of stairs, his hold never loosens. When we reach the top level, he taps in a code on the wall-mounted keypad, and we step through one set of wide double doors. We walk through two more sets of double doors and come out into a long narrow corridor with windows on one side and a row of separate steel cells on the other.

He unlocks one of the empty cells and guides me inside. I sit down on the end of the cold, hard bench and try to calm the rampant pounding in my chest. I wonder what they have in store for me next. There’s a metallic clunking sound as the door locks, and then I hear the heavy thread of his footsteps as he walks away.

“Hey, doll,” a deep voice says behind me. Every hair on my body rises to attention, and I refuse to turn around. “I don’t bite,” the voice adds, amusement coloring his tone. Running my hands through my hair, I tap my foot nervously on the ground. “That’s a Clementia uniform, right?” That got my attention.

Excerpt:

Luce grabs him roughly and shoves him against the wall. “They’ll kill you. They won’t hesitate. I won’t leave a friend.” There are tears in her eyes and his vision blurs as tears flood his own vision. Luce’s grip on him slackens as she seems to realize how close together they are. When Benson blinks the moisture away, he almost gasps. A dark-clothed Hunter strides past directly behind Luce. Crap. “Luce, they’re here,” he whispers.

Her eyes widen and he sees the fear that penetrates her expression. But just as quickly her eyes narrow and he can almost see the wheels turning in her head. Then, before he can so much as take another breath, she flexes her muscles, takes a deep breath, and leans forward and kisses him hard on the lips.

His entire body stiffens, shocked by the strange action taken by Luce when they’re in mortal danger, but then relaxes when he realizes what she’s doing: acting. She’s pretending to kiss him, just an act to fool the Hunters—two lovers in the shadows. Not the most wanted fugitives in the city. And yet, even her fake kissing sends Benson’s heart racing. Automatically, his lips melt into hers, rolling over them like gentle waves. His hand curls around the back of her head.

Excerpt:

Dad's alcohol coma hadn't worn off, his feet still propped on the half-empty case of beer. He slouched in the same beat-up wicker chair as last night while loud snores escaped his mouth. A can of Genesee dangled in his right hand, its contents leaking from the opening.

The hate in my chest suffocated me. He spent most of his time in this room, admiring the Native American pictures he had collected from garage sales and flea markets, drinking himself into a sloppy mess. He swore they'd be worth money someday, even the velvet ones. Useless.

Dangerous.

Worse, he'd never let Mom go without a fight.

With the movie coming out in just under two months, I thought it was time to dive head first into this series which has been on my TBR list for quite some time. The Maze Runner by James Dashner follows Thomas as he wakes in a strange place, with strange people and no memory of who or where he is. I’ve got to say, this book wasn’t anything like I expected, honestly it was better. I don’t think I’ve ever read anything like this before.

The way Dashner describes the Glade and the detail that goes into building this world in the book is absolutely amazing. Like its ridiculous how I can close my eyes and picture it all in my head. I also really enjoyed the characters and the way they talked and lived. It was different seeing all these kids sort of band together and pull their own weight.

Excerpt:

I looked up. It felt like someone was watching me. I glanced around the room. The door was still closed, and no one was around. I hadn’t heard anyone enter. Their maids were silent, but not that silent. I looked back around the room. The feeling was still there, but I was alone.

My focus went back to the documents scattered around the room in glass cases. One toward the far window caught my attention. The carnelian lines around my hand pulsated as if to tell me I was going in the right direction. The tingles in my arm felt much like they did when I was around Seth.

I missed him so much, and I was nowhere near knowing how to get him back. It was like Seth was sending me a sign even though we were far apart. I moved slowly down the line of books. Something was calling to the stone that was now imprinted into my arm. I stopped at each book as I passed. Why was one calling to me and all the others not?

Book Description:

Almost a hundred years ago, the Enchanters defeated the Lord of the Underworld in one of the most fearsome wars the world had ever seen. The public thinks that this victory means the people are safe. But they're wrong. The supernatural beasts the Lord unleashed remain on the earth, multiplying and ravaging what's left of civilization.

As long as these monsters exist, mankind will be in danger. And though the government, ruled by the magic-wielding Enchanters, seeks to protect their people, they are too few in number. They need the Defenders - a special class of non-magical humans - to fight the monsters. The Defenders are an elite force, and mankind's only hope against the horrors that live beyond their gates.

Fourteen-year-old Aurelia ""the Firedragon"" Sun has been training since she could walk to become a Defender, and her extraordinary combat skills have earned the attention of the powerful government. In fact, she's been tapped to represent her nation in an international monster-fighting competition, which pits champions from across the globe against creatures of the Underworld in a violent spectacle. If she wins, she will become a full-fledged member of the Defender force.

But as Aurelia moves deeper into the competition, she realizes that all is not as it appears. There's something sinister behind the competition, something that could change the way she sees everything and the Enchanters, it seems, are not the heroes she thought. Aurelia begins to ask questions. But before she can discover the truth, she is pitted against the most dangerous monster in the competition - one that will take her life if it can.

If she impressed them, they would let her enter the contest. And if she made it past their screening, and then through the qualifying round, and ultimately took the prize … her life would never be the same. She’d have the chance to do something much, much bigger than just taking home a trophy. She could change the world.

Suddenly, a man’s voice boomed out from above. “Aurelia Sun. Age: Fourteen. Classification: Norm. Nation: Triumvirate of North America.”

Excerpt:

Meeting Seth for the first time:

I closed my book and looked up from under the maple canopy to the blue sky above. I had a normal life, but girls in books always went on adventures. I guess that was what going far off to college was to me, an adventure. My future was already planned, but I’d give anything to be one of those heroines.

I wanted to live the life I found in these books. I was still lost in thought over the ending when there was a thump on my lap. College students were walking all around and a few tossing a football between them. I looked down expecting to see a football.

It wasn’t a football. The head of a perfectly cute guy was lying across my lap. He had tipped over from sleeping next to me and stayed fast asleep, even after his fall. I looked at him and waited for him to wake. I mean, his fall startled me out of my daydreaming. He didn’t wake. He kept sleeping peacefully.

Excerpt:

The bus ride to the quarantine facility took more than ten hours. I was shoved against the window by my seatmate who slept almost the entire trip. He was a big guy, taking up most of the seat, and when he slept his body lolled to the side, wedging me against the metal side of the bus.

As we traveled, the air turned hot and dry, different than the humid, sticky climate of my coastal Texas hometown. The old school bus didn’t have air conditioning and the small windows didn’t let much air in. My seatmate’s body heat didn’t help. I was hot, thirsty, and had to pee in the worst way.

Wondering how much longer I’d be drooled on by the guy next to me, I strained my face against the window, looking for anything on the flat landscape.

That’s when I saw them.

Ariane’s survival—and that of her adoptive father—depends on her ability to blend in among the full-blooded humans in a small Wisconsin town, to hide in plain sight at her high school from those who seek to recover their lost (and expensive) “project.”

But when a cruel prank at school goes awry, it puts her in the path of Zane Bradshaw, the police chief’s son and someone who sees too much. Someone who really sees her. After years of trying to be invisible, Ariane finds the attention frightening—and utterly intoxicating. Suddenly, nothing is simple anymore, especially not the rules…

This book is amazing!

Ariane Tucker lives by a set of rules, rules that her adoptive father expects her to follow. But what happens when the rules she’s lived by her whole life are rules she can no longer follow? The Rules by Stacey Kade is probably one of the best books I’ve read this year.  First off let’s talk about how much I love Ariane. Her character is so well written and her conflict about the two sides of herself is incredibly prominent.

I really enjoyed seeing the struggle that she went through trying to be someone who she wasn’t, but wanted to be. Kade built such a strong world and her characters touched me as I read. Zane was another favorite of mine. His backstory was so well thought out and the more we learned about him the more I just wanted to hug him.

Book Description:

Come for the apocalypse. Stay for cupcakes. Die for love. Madeleine Cost is working to become the youngest person ever to win the Archibald Prize for portraiture. Her elusive cousin Tyler is the perfect subject: androgynous, beautiful, and famous. All she needs to do is pin him down for the sittings.

None of her plans factored in the Spires: featureless, impossible, spearing into the hearts of cities across the world - and spraying clouds of sparkling dust into the wind. Is it an alien invasion? Germ warfare? They are questions everyone on Earth would like answered, but Madeleine has a more immediate problem.

At Ground Zero of the Sydney Spire, beneath the collapsed ruin of St James Station, she must make it to the surface before she can hope to find out if the world is ending.

Come for the apocalypse. Stay for cupcakes. Die for love.

I’m not going to lie, outside of the amazing artwork for this cover I decided to read And All The Stars by Andrea K. Höst for that line alone. I love me some apocalypse and cupcakes. I’m not entirely sure what I was expecting from a summary line like that, but it definitely wasn’t what I got. Now here me out, I am a huge supporter of indie authors. I love them and feel a lot of indie books are ten times better than the crap being published by publishing companies. But as much as I wanted to, I just could not get into this book.

I don’t know if it was the incredibly slow pace or the fact that I had no clue what was happening that did it, but it took forever for me to read. Madeleine seemed so naĂŻve to me and it was hard for me to picture her as a teenager. I didn’t love her character, but I did love Noi and the boys. Höst does a really great job of bringing her characters out of their shells and showcasing everyone’s uniqueness.
