Blog Tour: Volcanoes - Guest Post: Nicole Hamlett

Today we are pleased to welcome author Nicole Hamlett to Pink Fluffy Hearts where she'll discuss writing and her novel Volcanoes.

Writing by the Seat of My Pants – Don't try this at home!

I read blogs and articles from other authors that tell you exactly how to write your book. They have processes and outlines and structured schedules. They create character profiles and story arcs. Those are authors that I both envy, worship and when I'm huddled under my covers because I'm not sure how I could possibly be any worse at this, I curse.

I wrote an outline for Rifts, my second book, and then promptly obliterated it. I didn't write one single thing from that outline. I also tried my hand at character building. My characters laughed at me. I'm pretty sure that Grace hijacked my dream one night and told me in no uncertain terms that I would not get another word from her if I didn't stop crapping all over her personality.

Book Description:

Be careful what you ask of Fate - sometimes she gives it to you.

When we last saw our heroine, she'd watched her faithful pet rip off her new best friend's head to save her son's life and Atlantis was rising from the depths. Now, Grace Murphy is back in the third installment of the Huntress series, but this time she's facing an all-out war. It's critical that Nyx (and Atlantis) stay buried, but her psychotic brats will do most anything to get her back.

You didn't think that was all, did you? Of course there's more!

With Hypnos invading her dreams, Dylan caught up in the throes of his "change" and juggling her relationships with two hunky Gods, Drew and Heph, to say Grace's hands are full would be an understatement.

Grace wished her life would just go back to the way it was before, and that she wouldn't have her powers or responsibilities anymore. Unfortunately, it looks like Fate answered this time. The results aren't pretty.

I was originally drawn to Reckoning because of its gorgeous cover. Yes, I do choose my books by their cover, but don’t judge me for it. I just like looking at pretty things, who doesn’t? The summary of the book cemented my desire to read it and I’m glad it did. Reckoning is about sixteen, soon to be seventeen year old Katriona Matheson, a young woman who has been able to see dead people her entire life.

Her gift is not without danger though and now that she can no longer ignore it, something dark is coming for her. While I really enjoyed this book and the characters in it, the pacing is rather slow. Don’t get me wrong, I like seeing inside Kat’s head and major points for putting in so many awesome bands, Kat’s taste in music is the best.

Weekend Getaway

Have I mentioned how excited I am that the second part of this story is out? Because I am. Thank god for Mike’s Dad! I love how he makes Jules feel so welcome. I thought it was really sweet how he got her out of the line of fire, took her to breakfast, and showed her around town. He even let her drive his car and damn, what a nice car it was haha.

Sunday dinner with the family, that’s a big one. Riley Ross seriously out did herself with this second part of this story. Between the cooking together, cuddling, and sexytime I was eating out of the palm of her very talented hand. Mike is seriously like a modern day prince charming.

Synopsis:

Christopher Clarke is the nicest guy Amy Fallon has ever met. He is handsome, smart, funny, an all-around great guy. Tyler Clarke is hot. So why is Amy, one of the smartest girls in school, so clueless when it comes to realizing who she is truly falling in love with? Or better yet, who’s falling in love with her.

Amy is forced to spend the week at her grandmother’s house in Arizona. She returns home to New York with a closer bond to her grandmother, with a best friend who she adores and with a boyfriend who she believes is everything she has ever dreamed of. After months of communication with the two new men in her life, things finally seem to be falling in to place for Amy. That is, until she starts to realize whom her heart is truly longing for. When she returns to Arizona almost a year later, things don’t go quite as planned when she is blindsided not only by the death of her grandmother, but learns the truth behind the text messages from Tyler. With time, and a little help from her grandmother’s memory we are able to see if her broken heart can heal and get Amy back on the course she was destined for.

Tyler is a moron.

Okay, that’s rude, in his defense by the end of the book I no longer hate him, but still. Rebecca Rembish did an amazing job with the characters in this story. Texting Tyler is one of the most original concepts for a young adult contemporary romance I’ve seen in a while. Amy Fallon is an insecure, inexperienced teenager and she’s very much naïve when it comes to how things work in the world of teenage friendship and romance.

Rembish did a really amazing job of capturing what it’s like to be a teenager with insecurities and how that affects the way they see things and how they go about doing things. Then on the other side of things you have characters like Chris Clarke. He’s also very down to earth and thinks he isn’t the best looking guy around, but unlike Amy I feel he has a lot more confidence in the person he is.

Crave by Ty Langston:

As a reporter for the Wakefield Post, Harper Erkstine has seen everything. From murders to robberies, all of her recent stories have ended with tragic consequences so great, that she began to question if she made the right career choice for herself.

While all of her friends were dating, or going to clubs, she was winning journalism awards for covering the latest drive-by shooting or a home invasion that cost someone she knew, their lives.

She loved her job, it was rewarding to be a crime solver and get to the truth of the matter. As much as she loved her job, but the hours of a Metro beat reporter began to descend her into burn out mode.

She craved balance. A break, a welcome distraction every now and then. She forgot what it was like to have fun, to take a breath, smell the roses.

Was it wrong to want a great career and to have some kind of a personal life? She couldn’t remember the last time she had a date or danced with someone from the opposite sex.

In the middle of working on a missing person’s story that has rocked her town to the core, Harper decides as a favor to her friend and colleague to do a feature on local an up and coming rock band, called ‘Crave.’

It was a break from her routine, but Harper soon discovers that this band may have ties to the missing person, not only does she question why, but she also finds there is more to this band than just their music.

The Getaway by Riley Ross:

The Getaway isn’t your typical romance woman meets man of her dreams, loses him and then they get their happily ever after. It’s a romance story with hints of drama and plenty of comedy. Mike and Juliet have been dating for about four months. Juliet is madly in love with him but has never shared her feelings.

Mike hasn’t said those three magical words so she doesn’t even know if they are on the same page when it comes to their relationship. Mike takes Juliet on a two week vacation, so she can escape her family drama and stresses from her job. He has romantic surprises planned and there are several unexpected surprises for them both. How well do Mike and Juliet really know each other especially when an explosive secret from his past is revealed? Will their relationship survive a visit from his family and his ex-girlfriend? Will the secret destroy them or make them stronger as a couple? His mother has made it clear to everyone that she wants Mike back with his vile ex-girlfriend?

Excerpt from Weekend Getaway

"Morning Sweets,” he whispered.

“Morning Romeo,” I said softly as he grinned at me. I leaned over and kissed him on the mouth. He pulled me closer to him. He deepened the kiss as his hands roamed over my breasts. I purred as he slipped his hand underneath my tee shirt and lightly squeezed my nipple. Our breathing increased rapidly as we explored each other’s body.

His hands warmed my skin as he touched me. I was instantly turned on and I wanted him right then and there. The sunlight that filtered in through the shades highlighted his face. The air in the room was buzzing with electricity as I pushed him onto his back and straddled him. I felt his erection pressing against me and I rocked against him gently.
